WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Star Trek: Discovery.
Following the conclusion last week of Star Trek: Discovery‘s first season, the show’s executive producer reveals that big finale twist was planned from the very beginning.
With an all-star cast that includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Yeoh and Jason Isaacs, Discovery was pulling out all the stops to delve deeper into the world Gene Roddenberry introduced in 1966. There were various nods to the original series scattered throughout Discovery but the final one of the season created a direction connection between the two shows: In the season finale’s closing scene, Discovery dropped out of warp to respond to a message the legendary U.S.S. Enterprise.

Appearing on CBS All Access’ After Trek, Discovery co-creator Alex Kurtzman discussed how he had always wanted Season 1 to end.
“So the whole season was reverse-engineered knowing really at the beginning where we wanted to end,” he explained. “And from Sonequa [Martin-Green]’s arc to the bridge crew coming together as a family, and knowing that the Enterprise was going to show up as a last frame because obviously, we owe the audience some answers to the question of ‘Why has Spock never mentioned his half-sister before?’ So obviously the Enterprise promises answers to that question.”

Over the decades, there have been many iterations of Star Trek shows and movies, but most have focused on the Enterprise and its captains. From Pike to Kirk to Picard, we’ve seen plenty from the bridge of the Enterprise, but Discovery‘s aim is to chart new territory. Thankfully, it looks as if Enterprise‘s finale reveal could help tie the old with the new.
Interestingly, Kurtzman’s words echo previous comments on how the arrival of the Enterprise will affect Discovery moving forward. Reminding fans that the show is called Discovery and not Enterprise, Captain Pike and his crew will still play second fiddle to Michael Burnham, Saru and the rest of our series regulars. However, with the timelines neatly lining up for the arrival of fan-favorite Spock, the tease of what’s to come will surely bring viewers back for more.
Streaming now on CBS All Access, Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, Mary Chieffo, Jason Isaacs and Michelle Yeoh.
