Fraggle Rock Returns to Comic Books with New Series

Let the music play: Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock will return to comic books with a four-issue miniseries at BOOM! Studios’ Archaia imprint, scheduled to debut in May. CBR has the first details.

The new Fraggle Rock series will be published in an 8-inch by 8-inch format similar to Archaia’s Mouse Guard and the imprint’s past Fraggle Rock releases. Each issue will feature a different creative team, with Jared Cullum (who’s contributed in the past to Archaia’s The Storyteller: Giants and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth 2017 Special) writing and illustrating (in watercolor) issue #1; a story where “Mokey Fraggle is losing her love for creating her art and needs her friends’ help to
rediscover her inspiration.”

Fraggle Rock was an exceptionally unique show where the characters were never 2-dimensional,” Cullum said in a statement. “They have authentic feelings, character flaws, and learned, as we do in life, through stumbling to the right decision in a very immersive and connective way. It will always resonate with our hearts.”

Fraggle Rock has a history in comic books dating back to the early days of the television series, which aired on HBO in the United States. The first Fraggle Rock comic book series debuted in 1985 as part of Marvel’s ’80s kid-friendly Star Comics line, and was illustrated by acclaimed comics veteran Marie Severin. Fraggle Rock returned to comics in 2010, as part of Archaia’s partnership with the Jim Henson Company.

The first issue of the new Fraggle Rock series has a cover by Cullum, and a variant by Jake Myler which will connect to the other three issues in the series, along with a retailer incentive fifth cover that will ship with issue #4.

“We’re proud to celebrate 35 years of Fraggle Rock with all-new stories from an eclectic group of creators,” BOOM! Studios editor Cameron Chittock said in a statement. “Each issue captures the spirit of the series in an exciting way, honoring the tradition Jim Henson established of telling stories with genuine heart and a confident belief that what we share outweighs our differences.”

Fraggle Rock premiered in 1983, marking this year the 35th anniversary of the TV series, which ran from 1983 to 1987. It stands as one of Jim Henson’s most popular creations beyond the classic Muppets and Seasame Street casts. BOOM! Studios’ new Fraggle Rock #1 is scheduled for release in March.
