Brian Michael Bendis Will Explain Why Superman Is Wearing Red Trunks

One of the more hotly debated topics in superhero comics is Superman’s red trunks. Fans and creators either fall on the pro-trunks or anti-trunks side of the conversation, with little room for sticking in the middle.

“I’m not going to get too deep in the weeds on this,” Bendis said on the Word Balloon podcast. “Basically, I was offered the trunks. I was not fully aware of the trunks controversy that has been dogging Superman for the last little while.” Bendis initially told DC Co-Publisher Dan Didio that if Superman ever came available during his DC tenure, he’d love to take a crack at the Man of Steel.

Didio told Bendis that they were starting a new direction with Superman in Action Comics #1000, and it’d be a great opportunity for the writer to jump on board. Another suggestion from Didio was for Bendis to debut the trunks in Action Comics, to which Bendis agreed upon.

“We haven’t done the shorts in awhile,” Didio said. “It’s been a little bit of a controversy, I’m sure you can understand. I think people will be happy to see them, and it’ll speak to what you have to say with Superman.” Bendis would also add that there will be an in-story explanation for why Superman has decided to go back to displaying his red trunks outside of his costume again.

It was announced in November that Bendis had signed a “multifaceted, multilayered” exclusive agreement with DC. While Bendis has written many titles for Marvel, including Daredevil, Avengers, New Avengers, Uncanny X-Men and more, he hasn’t penned solo titles for either Wolverine or Deadpool.

Brian Michael Bendis will begin his DC Comics tenure with a 10-page Superman story in Action Comics #1000, illustrated by Jim Lee, followed by a Man of Steelsix-issue weekly miniseries. He will then write both Superman and Action Comics.
