Winter Soldier actor Sebastian Stan has reiterated that he definitely wants to see his character take up the Captain America mantle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking at a panel at Wizard World St. Louis, Stan did however state that the timing must be right because the Bucky Barnes version of Cap is very much different from the altruistic hero that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers embodies.
When asked if and when he’d like to take up the role, Stan said, “I mean, yeah I would love that one day, absolutely. I don’t know when that day would be, and I just think…it would be a very different Captain America you know, you wouldn’t be able to have the same Captain America as you have right now because he’s a different guy.”
“Again, there’s this issue where we’ve got to get him to be trustworthy enough for them to give him that responsibility, you know, to fill those shoes, and those are hard shoes to fill. So I think it’s possible, I really do, but it just has to make sense and we might need a little more time,” he added.

In the comics, Bucky took up the shield after Cap’s death immediately after the Civil War comics, and went on to join the Avengers in events such as Secret Invasion and Siege, before he eventually handed back the mantle to a resurrected Rogers. A lot of his secrets were kept from the public, however, due to BuckyCap’s past as an assassin, but he could be on a path of redemption in the MCU as he partners with Rogers and Black Panther’s army in Wakanda to fend off Thanos’ invasion in Infinity War.
The MCU already teased him wielding the shield in The Winter Soldier movie, and with Marvel Studios hinting at a new era in Phase 4, many have speculated Rogers may die allowing Bucky to fill his shoes when Infinity War ends.
