American Gods Season 2 Enlists Hannibal Producer as Showrunner

Following Bryan Fuller and Michael Green’s departure from American Gods, Starz has tapped Hannibal producer Jesse Alexander as showrunner on the sophomore series.

Though Fuller and Green penned the first six episodes of Season 2, The Hollywood Reporter reports that the network plans to start anew with Alexander. American Gods creator Neil Gaiman was reportedly unhappy with how Fuller and Green were diverging from the source material for the second season.

In a statement, Gaiman said he was “glad that we, and the cast and crew, will have Jesse shepherding us on the way.” He also stressed that Alexander loves both the book and series itself and is “dedicated to making future seasons of American Gods as good and as beautiful and unique as they can be.”

Alexander is no stranger to Fuller’s past works. He served as a producer for Fuller’s NBC series Hannibal and CBS’ Star Trek Discovery. On American Gods, he will work with Gaiman, who plans to take on a bigger role in advising the direction of the series. With the new showrunner, it’s still unclear when the second season of the series will debut on Starz.

American Gods was originally developed for television by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green and stars Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon, Emily Browning as Laura Moon, Crispin Glover as Mr. World, Bruce Langley as Technical Boy, Yetide Badaki as Bilquis, Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney and Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday.
