Jean Grey’s X-Men team is adding Gambit to its roster with April’s X-Men: Red #3, as revealed Tuesday in a Marvel press release.

Previously, Marvel had teased that one more “fan-favorite” would join the X-Men: Red cast — and Gambit certainly fits that description.
“Things have heated up with attacks on mutants across the globe,” editor Mark Paniccia said in a statement. “We know that one of the X-Men’s most powerful villains is behind the chaos, but will Jean, Nightcrawler, All-New Wolverine and Honey Badger have a chance to stop the next deadly wave? A favorite Cajun mutant might be able to tip the scales in their favor… but at what cost?”
X-Men: Red #3, from writer Tom Taylor and artist Mahmud Asrar, is scheduled for release on April 4. The identity of the villain that will bring the team together is unknown at the moment, but it’s possible the antagonist has a connection to Gambit, which necessitates his addition to the team. The Cajun mutant will also co-star in the Rogue & Gambit miniseries written by Kelly Thompson and illustrated by Pere Perez, which debuts this week.
2018 is shaping up to be a busy year for Jean Grey. The freshly launched Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey is a five-issue miniseries that brings the Phoenix host back from the dead, ahead of Jean stepping into a leadership role in X-Men: Red. The time-displaced teenage version of the character starred in her own ongoing series, Jean Grey, which ended this month with her apparent death.
