DC Comics’ Dark Knights: Metal event features seven twisted versions of the Dark Knight from different corners of the multiverse. Though there are twisted amalgamations of Batman as a Green Lantern or Batman mixed with the DNA of Superman enemy Doomsday, none of them are as deadly as the Batman Who Laughs, a version of the Dark Knight who wound up with his genetics altered by the Joker. He’s the leader of the Dark Knights, and leads the charge in the Knights’ current rein of terror in the DC universe.

As intriguing as his story is, one of the biggest mysteries revolving around the Batman Who Laughs’ is in regard to his prisoner. In his Metal-themed one-shot, the villain spends his time relating his origin story to an unwilling participant, one who’s identity is hidden by a massive amount of bandages obscuring his or her face.
Speaking with Newsarama, Metal writer Scott Snyder was asked about the significance of that enigmatic character and if they there are plans to return to them. With an emphatic “Yeah,” Snyder assured that the prisoner will be a big part of the story going forward. “There’s a plan he has behind the scenes,” Snyder said of the Joker/Batman hybrid and his captive. Who the prisoner is and the Batman Who Laughs’ plans for them will be revealed within the final two issues of Metal, and odds are it will not go well for them or the heroes of the DC universe.
Dark Knights: Metal #5 arrives on Jan. 31, with the sixth and final issue coming in February.
