Batman: Gotham by Gaslight: First Official Clip Released

A new clip from the upcoming animated movie Batman: Gotham by Gaslight shows a Victorian Poison Ivy meeting up with the era’s primary boogie man, Jack the Ripper. The movie is an adaptation of an Elseworlds one-shot comic by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola that imagines a world in which Batman has become the vigilante protector of Gotham City in 1889.

The clip shows Ivy walking down a deserted alleyway, fearful of the night noises and strange, rolling fog closing in behind her. She’s met with a dead end, and runs down another alley to get back onto the street. Instead, she comes face-to-face with a bulky man carrying a doctor’s bag. Ivy attempts to seduce the man, but he pulls a knife. The clip ends with her pleading for help.

Published in 1989, Gotham by Gaslight was the first Elseworlds comic to be released — the Elseworlds series places popular superheroes in alternate timelines and states of reality. The one-shot was later retroactively added to the Elseworlds catalog when Gotham by Gaslight became a cult hit, prompting more superhero reimaginings.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight releases digitally on Jan. 23, 2018. The movie will release on Blu-Ray and DVD on Feb. 6, 2018.
