It’s official: Rey definitely has parents. During an interview for her upcoming film Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Daisy Ridley addressed the theory that her character was born through Immaculate Conception and promptly shot it down.
Asked if she had ever read a fan theory about Rey that was right, she said no. “I mean, I’ve read a fan theory about Immaculate Conception,” she told ScreenRant. “In fact, that was the only one that I read because someone directed me toward it and I was like you should get to work. Immaculate Conception. Then someone told me that I was actually Snoke or something or other, and it was time travel and I do think it’s hilarious that there’s this like great character and everyone was trying to attribute it to another character.”

When the theory that Rey is somehow related to Obi-Wan Kenobi was brought up, she said, “Oh. Oh. Oh. I dunno. The only one I read is about Immaculate Conception, so technically I’ve never read a real one.”
Of course, the Star Wars universe is no stranger to Immaculate Conception, so this theory about Rey’s parentage isn’t too far-fetched. In fact, a major character was conceived without a father: Darth Vader himself. In the prequel trilogy, Anakin’s mother Shmi revealed to Qui-Gon Jinn that her son had no father and that she could not explain his birth. Though many theories have been proposed to explain how this came to be, the new Star Wars canon does not provide any answers. If Ridley’s comment is any indication, Anakin’s Immaculate Conception may be a one-time event for the Star Wars universe.
