Altered Carbon Teaser Reveals Netflix’s New, Lavish Sci-Fi Series

Netflix today released the first teaser for Altered Carbon, a science fiction series adapted from Richard Morgan’s 2002 hardboiled cyberpunk novel about a world in which human consciousness can be stored digitally and replanted into “sleeves” — replacement bodies — upon death. The teaser also reveals the series’ release date — Feb. 2, 2018.

Morgan’s book won the Philip K. Dick award for best novel in 2003. The television adaptation was first announced in 2016, and is set to be helmed by Laeta Kalogridis, the screenwriter for such films as Night Watch and Shutter Island. Kalogridis was also executive producer on the now-defunct WB network’s Birds of Prey series, which was based loosely on the DC Comics series by the same name.

Altered Carbon follows Takeshi Kovacs (played by Suicide Squad‘s Joel Kinnaman), a former U.N. elite soldier, who is hired to solve the apparent murder of Laurens Bancroft, an affluent Meth (someone who has lived and died more times than is common). Laurens is resleeved, but has no recollection of the 48 hours leading up to his murder.

Debuting on Netflix on Feb. 2, 2018, Altered Carbon is developed by Laeta Kalogridis and stars Joel Kinnaman as Takeshi Kovacs, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Quellcrist Falconer, James Purefoy as Laurens Bancroft, Kristin Lehman as Miriam Bancroft, Martha Higareda as Kristin Ortega, Dichen Lachman as Reileen Kawahara and Leonardo Nam as Stronghold Kovacs.
