Sony has worked to get a new Masters of the Universe film off the ground since 2009, with Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) circling the project in 2012. McG was previously slated to direct the film, but stepped aside earlier this year. Goyer is no stranger to working on fan-favorite franchises; he was a screenwriter on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel, with his directing credits including Blade: Trinity and The Unborn.

The original Masters of the Universe live-action film starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, which saw him travel from his home of Eternia to Earth in order to stop his nemesis Skeletor from using the Cosmic Key for evil means. The animated series ran from 1983 to 1985. Details on the new Masters of the Universe film have yet to be revealed, including who will pick up the Power Sword to become He-Man.
