Will Poulter appears in a single episode of The Bear Season 2, but his character Luca makes an unmistakable impact on the show and its viewers.

The Bear Season 2 includes many recognizable guest stars who help flesh out the series’ universe. Will Poulter joined The Bear after his role as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. And despite being in only one episode, Poulter makes a lasting impact on the audience by playing a quietly pivotal character.
In Season 2, Episode 4, “Honeydew,” Carmy sends his pastry chef Marcus all the way to Copenhagen to learn from the well-established Luca. Luca is clearly at the top of his game, as evidenced by Carmy being willing to send Marcus across the world to benefit from his experience. That high level of natural talent is something that Luca has in common with Carmy, but the episode reveals that the two chefs are on completely different paths.
The Bear Contrasts Carmy and Luca
Luca’s blue apron and patchwork tattoos prompt The Bear‘s audience to think of Carmy. This idea is only further cemented when Luca tells Marcus that he started working at a restaurant at the same time as another young chef whom he saw as competition. Although Luca never says it was Carmy, the implication is that Carmy was that other chef. Luca’s personality and accomplishments contrast Carmy in such a way that he highlights Carmy’s unhealthy approach to his career.
Being a chef is the single thing that Carmy puts all of his time and energy into. While he achieves significant success, his personal relationships crumble — as evidenced by the moment in The Bear Season 2 finale when he decides he cannot be in a relationship and still be good at his job. Luca proves that Carmy’s way is not the only way. Throughout “Honeydew,” Luca keeps a completely calm attitude, even when he is critiquing Marcus’s work. He is able to offer constructive criticism without losing his cool, which sharply contrasts how Carmy aggressively confronted Marcus in Season 1, Episode 7, “Review.” Whereas Carmy is always operating at a high level of intensity, Luca stays grounded. The fact that Luca is able to have a different approach and still achieve success shows The Bear viewers that there is hope for Carmy in the future, even if he doesn’t believe so.
Luca Re-Establishes the Difficulty of Being a Chef
Near the end of the episode, Marcus asks Luca a question that reveals something else Luca and Carmy have in common: turmoil in their careers. “Was it worth it, the time you put in?” he wonders and Luca replies, “Ask me tomorrow.” That implies that Luca has experienced his own pitfalls that have been bad enough to cast doubt on his entire career. Even though he has a healthier approach to his career than Carmy, he can’t completely escape the chaos of the kitchen.
His admission re-establishes a theme present throughout The Bear: how difficult it is to be a chef. Both Carmy and Luca have worked in highly stressful environments and overcome professional difficulties. In addition, the restaurant business is extremely unstable — as was highlighted in Season 2, Episode 3, “Sundae,” when Sydney was researching restaurants in Chicago and saw how many of them had closed down. That revelation in the prior episode makes Luca’s comment in “Honeydew” even more impactful, because he has plenty of reason to doubt his career choice.
Season 2 of The Bear highlights how turning “The Beef” into “The Bear” is an extremely difficult endeavor. The lessons Luca teaches Marcus make the audience respect Carmy and Sydney’s commitment to “The Bear” even more. However, the fact that he’s much healthier emotionally also creates tension because it gives the audience reason to wonder how much that commitment will cost them. Although he only appears in one story, Luca adds an important layer to the entire season.
