James Gunn isn’t planning for a third Suicide Squad movie, and given the property’s reception and history on the big screen, this makes sense.
Now the creative lead for DC Studios and spearheading a cinematic reboot of the DCU’s many heroes and villains, James Gunn has recently stated there are no plans for a third Suicide Squad movie. This decision is very surprising, especially considering how attached to the characters Gunn seems to be. At the same, it’s probably a good thing that the characters and concept are being shelved for a bit, especially if the DC Universe reboot is going to have a chance at making it big with audiences.
The Suicide Squad Brand Is One of DC’s Most Toxic Properties
As mentioned, the first Suicide Squad movie wasn’t very well-received at all, with its poor reception being unique even in the controversial DC Extended Universe. In the case of Zack Snyder’s films Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, both movies have several defendable points, not to mention a legion of fans who will stand by their merits. Even those who dislike them will typically admit that something along the lines of Man of Steel was somewhat needed given the character’s reputation at the time and the underwhelming throwback that was Superman Returns.
With the theatrical version of Suicide Squad, however, even director David Ayer has disowned it, stating that it’s not at all the movie he set out to make. To this end, he and several fans have campaigned to see the original “Ayer cut” of the movie released, giving moviegoers a clearer impression of his vision. The main reason that Suicide Squad was actually fairly successful at the box office was that it introduced both a new version of the Joker and the first live-action cinematic take on Harley Quinn. Unfortunately, the movie’s largely negative reception was likely a big reason why the much better-received follow-up The Suicide Squad (directed by James Gunn as a sort of soft reboot) was a box office disappointment.
To be fair, The Suicide Squad was released when the world was on lockdown due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The movie’s dual release on HBO Max further affected its financial intake at the box office. Still, many were shocked at how good it was (namely compared to its predecessor), which speaks to just how poorly many thought of the first Suicide Squad film. Thus, a third movie in the series could easily see similar failure at the box office despite The Suicide Squad and its TV spinoff Peacemaker righting the property’s reception ship.
A Suicide Squad 3 Might Confuse Audiences About the DCU
Something that’s been noted by some fans is the fact that a new season of Peacemaker and a show based around Amanda Waller are on the way. This is despite the fact that the DC Extended Universe is being rebooted and becoming the DC Universe, with the upcoming Superman: Legacy being the first true entry in this new shared cinematic continuity. Peacemaker Season 2 is apparently coming out after Legacy, which means it could be placed in the DCU somehow. Some have also hypothesized that this season and Waller will actually be the swansongs to the DCEU, closing the door on those old characters for them to never be seen again.
That may actually be necessary, as keeping the Suicide Squad of all characters while rebooting Superman and Batman is incredibly perplexing. Not only should the Squad have been the more expendable of these properties, but it also runs the risk of confusing more casual audience members. This could see some moviegoers wondering why the Suicide Squad from the old movies is interacting with the new Superman. Worst of all, the Squad definitely became a bit oversaturated in the time between their first cinematic movie and the DCU reboot. This was worsened by Harley Quinn in particular being thrust harder into the limelight more than ever, with adaptations and merchandise constantly featuring both properties.
Given the dubious nature of the first movie, it definitely felt like too much, too soon. Thus, James Gunn is wisely focusing on getting other properties right on the big screen and shelving something that should logically be a lesser priority. Hopefully, by the time the DC Universe is really up and running, there will be room for the Suicide Squad to go on deadly missions again. Until then, Gunn should keep them away for as long as needed, ensuring that their next big appearance is one worthy of their deadly potential.
