As players work towards finding Princess Zelda, regardless of the path they choose, everyone is clued into the twist as they experience the story.
With so many options and seemingly endless ways to tackle the quests found around Hyrule, it was entirely possible some players wouldn’t discover Tears of the Kingdom‘s main story if they weren’t pursuing the Main Quests. The memories from Breath of the Wild were predominantly optional, making it easy to miss the finer details of the plot. For the sequel, however, practically every player is included in the twists and surprises central to the plot.
Unlike the story from a century ago adding much-needed context to a lot of Link’s actions in the former game, TOTK‘s central story unfolds as the player progresses. This actively keeps the player in the know as to what is happening and why, even if they pursue different paths — mainly, where Princess Zelda is and what the ongoing sightings of her mean. No matter what quests or adventures players choose to do, the routes all hint toward the same reveal.
All Roads Lead to Hyrule Castle
Regardless of whether players go after the regional phenomena plaguing Hyrule or the geoglyph quest, it’s rapidly apparent that the Zelda appearing and vanishing around the world isn’t who she seems to be. Even if players decide to tackle the Princess Sightings side adventure for the illustrious frog armor first, the same twist is teased. This is a far better approach to elaborating Tears of the Kingdom‘s main story than the memories seen in Breath of the Wild. No matter what players do, or don’t do, the central idea comes across clearly.
The eventual convergence of the Sages at Hyrule Castle hint that all the Princess Zelda sightings are just puppets of Ganondorf, but the other plotlines that tease this explicit revelation may seem redundant. However, the geogylph quest and the Potential Princess Sightings side adventure reward players who want to know more about where Zelda actually is, what these imposters are doing around Hyrule, and the actual rewards for completing these paths.
Incorporating the Story with the Open World
Having a variety of ways to learn about the story enables Tears of the Kingdom‘s open world to feel even more organic. Players who only pursue the Master Sword can be clued into the Light Dragon’s true identity with the cutscenes that play throughout the whole encounter. Even just reading the compendium entry for the dragon alludes to it having a deeper connection to Link. The familiar cutscene for the Blood Moon with Zelda’s narration seems completely out of character compared to her dialogue from Breath of the Wild, so keen players instantly feel that something’s off. Beyond the more optional elements, the main story locations work equally well.
While all regional phenomena is clearly the work of Ganondorf, Zelda’s cameos at each location certainly suggest something strange is going on with the Princess. Beyond the monsters infesting every area, Zelda outright telling the Sages and people nearby bizarre things certainly adds to the red flags and eventual reveal that she’s an imposter. Even for players who immediately race to Hyrule Castle, the ancient art on the tunnel where the game starts can finally be uncovered, which depicts Zelda’s transformation into the Light Dragon. Every element that touches on the ongoing plot points towards the same information regarding the twist, even the endgame areas and side activities. Any playstyle in Tears of the Kingdom rewards players equally, ensuring practically every player is in on the central twist.
