Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star Paul Rudd still loves playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Scott Lang, even seven years after his debut, as recent comments clearly prove.
Speaking with Access Hollywood, Rudd explained his love for Scott Lang as a character. “Well, it’s fun to play a kind of a regular guy, who’s thrown into these extraordinary circumstances. And you know, a guy who seems to be somewhat conflicted about being a superhero,” the actor said. “And so to try and play against that, and be somewhat relatable, and still do crazy things, it’s a really fun challenge and it’s fun to do every single time.”
Director Peyton Reed also shared a crucial detail about the new film, claiming Scott’s actions will significantly alter the MCU as fans know it. “Things happen in this movie that are going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe permanently,” Reed said. “And it’s fun for us that Scott Lang is at the center of that change.”
Scott’s first appearance in the MCU occurred in 2015’s Ant-Man, which introduced his character to the rapidly expanding franchise. The film initially depicted the character as a petty thief, but his heart, skill set and possession of Hank Pym’s size-shrinking suit eventually landed him a spot in the Avengers. While Scott had a long history of crime, his deeds were always motivated by a desire to provide for his daughter, and joining the superhero team changed his life. Ant-Man appeared three more times in the MCU, playing a crucial role in Avengers: Endgame that helped save the universe after the blip.
Quantumania is the third film in the Ant-Man Trilogy, and Scott will dive deeper to explore the Quantum Realm with the help of Hope van Dyne/the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) and her super-scientist parents. Notably, Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conquerer will make his proper debut, officially connecting the film to the 2021 Disney+ TV series Loki. Majors played a variant of Kang, called He Who Remains, who served as a hidden adversary to Loki and Sylvie in the series’ first season. The variant’s defeat unleashed chaos across the multiverse, leading to the imminent rise of Kang as the MCU’s next big bad in 2025’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which will be directed by Shang-Chi‘s Destin Daniel Cretton.
Some fans have expressed concern over Scott’s portrayal in the Comic-Con Quantumania trailer, which has yet to be released online. The hero’s role in saving the universe appears to have gone to his head, making him famous beyond belief. The distractions seemingly cause him to neglect his troubled teenage daughter Cassie (now played by Kathryn Newton), who’s still dealing with the fact that he missed five crucial years of her life during the Blip. However, their relationship will become further altered when Cassie dons a Pym suit of her own.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is set to release on Feb. 17, 2022, and will be the first film of MCU’s Phase 5.
