GOTG Vol. 3 Director Apologizes for Trailer’s Online Absence

Marvel Studios premiered a handful of trailers during its jam-packed presentation at Comic-Con International in San Diego, but so far, only those for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law have been released online. That means, for now, the first look at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remains exclusive to Hall H.

But, as a regretful director James Gunn explains there’s a perfectly good reason for the footage being withheld from wide release.

In response to a fan wishing they could have experienced the preview, the filmmaker wrote, “I wish you could have too. But it’s not just Marvel, it’s also me. Although I love the teaser some VFX aren’t where I’d want them to be for repeated views & close inspection – remember we didn’t wrap long ago – so you’ll have to wait just a beat! Sorry!”

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explained on Saturday that the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 teaser won’t be released “any time soon.” “It was really just for the people at Hall H today,” he said.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Is ‘the End of This Story’

As reported by CBR’s Mira Jacobs, the Hall H footage suggests the third Guardians film will turn its focus to the tragic origin of Rocket Raccoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper and portrayed in motion capture by Sean Gunn. “This is the end of this story,” James Gunn told the audience at Comic-Con International. “I’m sorry. Some stories have an end. Doesn’t mean everyone dies!”

“This is about the final arc that we began in the first movie,” Gunn continued following the screening of the Vol. 3 footage. “When they first told me about it, I thought it sounds a little goofy, but I was thinking about it driving home, and I realized, ‘If there’s a talking raccoon, he’s the saddest creature in the universe.'”

The director was joined onstage at Comic-Con by the returning Guardians of the Galaxy cast, plus new additions Will Poulter (Adam Warlock), Maria Bakalova (the voice of Cosmo the Space Dog), and Chukwudi Iwuji, newly announced as Marvel’s High Evolutionary.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will arrive in theaters on May 23, 2023, as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Five. However, before that, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff will star in Gunn’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, streaming in December on Disney+.
