Black Adam’s SDCC Panel Reveals a Potentially Major Suicide Squad Connection

Descriptions of the SDCC-exclusive Black Adam footage indicate that a key character from the Suicide Squad franchise could appear in the film.

The Black Adam panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 recently revealed a potentially major connection between the upcoming DC Extended Universe blockbuster and the Suicide Squad movies.

Liam Nolan, who attended the panel on CBR’s behalf, tweeted that the SDCC-exclusive footage included an appearance by Task Force X boss Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). According to Nolan, Waller demands to know an unspecified team’s line-up, with the scene’s context implying that Black Adam will introduce a new superhero group to the DCEU. Waller being in the market for another team certainly lines up with the finale of the HBO Max series Peacemaker (which saw Task Force X’s covert status compromised), although this remains pure speculation at this time.

Waller’s involvement in Black Adam comes several weeks after star Dwayne Johnson shared the eponymous anti-hero’s stance on the Suicide Squad itself. Responding to a fan on Twitter, Johnson declared that “Black Adam doesn’t give a fuck” about the band of world-saving supervillains. In fairness, this seems to be Black Adam’s default attitude towards the DCEU’s superpowered community in general, if promotional footage of him going head-to-head with Justice Society of America is anything to go by.

The anti-hero’s showdown with the JSA features prominently in the Black Adam SDCC trailer, particularly the moment when he trades blows with Aldis Hodge’s Carter Hall/Hawkman. The trailer also showcases Black Adam battling Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan) and Maxine Hunkel/Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and teases a confrontation between him and Al Rothstein/Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo). At the same time, it highlights Nelson’s efforts to convince Black Adam that he needs to become Earth’s savior rather than its destroyer, too.

Although Black Adam’s skirmish with the JSA hasn’t even hit screens yet, many fans are already pushing for a fight between him and Henry Cavill’s Superman in a future DCEU project. Johnson addressed the prospect that he might one day slug it out with the Man of Steel during the SDCC panel, keeping fans’ hopes of seeing this titanic tussle alive. “I will say, as you guys know, we’re all in deep in this mythology, and it’s been the age-old question of who would win in a fight between Black Adam or Superman?” Johnson said. “Pound for pound, they’re pretty close. I guess it probably all depends on who’s playing Superman. I’ll just say that. I’ll leave it at that.”

Black Adam opens in theaters on Oct. 21.
