Moon Knight star Ethan Hawke explains why his dislike of “long-term commitments” means he’s unlikely to reprise the Arthur Harrow role again.
Moon Knight star Ethan Hawke recently confirmed he’s not interested in returning for any future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.
Hawke opened up about the possibility of him reprising the Arthur Harrow role in an interview with IndieWire. “I’m not supposed to talk about it,” he said. “I had to sign an NDA about dealing with [Marvel Studios], but I’m not interested in long-term commitments. I protected myself because I didn’t know what it was going to be. I just wanted to know what that sandbox was like. And it’s what young people are watching, so why are we going to sit there and tell them it’s not good?”
The Oscar-nominated actor also spoke about how Marvel Studios approaches its film and TV productions, which he described as more geared towards actors than directors. Hawke then suggested that this could explain why acclaimed auteurs like Martin Scorsese are critical of the MCU. He went on to say that Robert Downey Jr.’s performance in 2008’s Iron Man convinced Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige of the importance of passionate actors, and described Oscar Isaac’s turn in Moon Knight as the best thing about the series.
What’s Next For Moon Knight In The MCU?
Isaac technically portrays three characters in Moon Knight: British gift shop worker Steven Grant, American mercenary Marc Spector, and mysterious assassin Jake Lockley. Both Grant and Lockley are actually alternate personalities spawned by Spector’s disassociative identity disorder, with the latter only appearing during the finale’s brief mid-credits scene. Moon Knight head writer Jeremy Slater recently promised fans that Lockley’s story will be explored in greater detail in future MCU projects. “Is he going to be a friend? Is he an enemy? I think all those are really exciting questions for whoever takes up the reins,” Slater teased.
Slater later revealed that Moon Knight almost included several other cameos, including one by Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman/Black Knight. “The only two [cameos] that we seriously discussed? Dane Whitman from Eternals of course, because at the time Steven Grant was going to be working at the same museum,” he said. “But there was never any logical reason for him to be in the show.”
The head writer added that the Moon Knight writers’ room also toyed with the idea of working former Captain America Steve Rogers into the show, now an elderly man following the events of Avengers: Endgame. “What happens if we try to get Chris Evans back as old Captain America? You know, you sit there and play that ‘what if’ game among your writers,” Slater said.
