It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney has a pitch for the Marvel Cinematic Universe involving the cast of the hit series and the upcoming Fantastic Four film.
In response to a Fandom tweet calling for fans to share their ideal Fantastic Four casting, McElhenney shared a photoshopped poster giving him top billing as the film’s Mister Fantastic. McElhenney’s Always Sunny costars appeared too, filling out his hypothetical Fantastic Four with his wife Kaitlin Olson as his on-screen romantic interest the Invisible Woman, Charlie Day as the Human Torch and Danny DeVito as The Thing. Glenn Howerton’s ominous glare threatens the team as the villainous Doctor Doom.
Since their humble origins as the proprietors of the fictional Paddy’s Pub, the Always Sunny cast have found themselves involved in many popular film and television projects. Though none have officially made their way into the MCU yet, DeVito has remained a popular fancast for Wolverine for years. However, McElhenney, who knows plenty about cultivating mass from his role as Always Sunny‘s Mac, seems to believe The Thing would be an equally fun and fitting role for DeVito.
The prompt McElhenney responded to also asked fans to provide a director of choice for their hypothetical Fantastic Four project. McElhenney capped off his tongue-in-cheek pitch by listing documentarian and independent director Werner Herzog as the visionary at the helm of his Fantastic Four.
Though McElhenney’s tweet was intended as a joke, it’s not an entirely impossible concept. John Krasinski, who likewise started his career on a popular sitcom, landed the role of Mister Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due, in part, to popular fancasting. However, Krasinki’s continuation in the Reed Richards role is currently in question.
McElhenney may have some competition in the department of television stars with MCU intentions. On top of campaigning to be Star Wars live-action Ezra Bridger, iZombie’s Rahul Kohli has likewise thrown his name in the ring for the leading Fantastic Four role on more than one occasion.
Krasinski’s possible recasting is far from the only rumor flying around about the MCU’s introduction of the Fantastic Four. From rumors of Steven Spielberg’s directorial involvement to a possible introduction of The Thing in the upcoming She-Hulk series, anything seems possible for the MCU’s iteration of The Fantastic Four.
Mister Fantastic and the rest of the Illuminati can be seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, currently streaming on Disney+.
