The following contains spoilers for The Boys Season 3, now streaming on Prime Video.
A fan of The Boys created a fast-paced 2D animation tribute to Billy Butcher and Homelander’s fight during a crucial moment in Season 3.
Twitter user @RocketBoiART shared a 27-second video featuring Butcher and Homelander engaged in their laser eye fight from Season 3, Episode 6, “Herogasm.” The caption for the tweet reads, “The Boys Season 3 has been so good. Had to do a small animation tribute to Butcher vs Homelander.” Set to the tune of “Honest Eyes” by Black Tide, the video shows the enemies glaring at each other with sparkling eyes before laser beams shoot out and connect in a colorful explosion.
In the replies to the tweet, multiple accounts tagged The Boys‘ official Twitter, trying to capture the attention of the Prime Video series’ social media. The tweet received thousands of retweets, over 29,000 likes and over 300,000 views.
The dramatization of the animation added even more tension to the fight scene as it played out in the episode. Butcher, empowered by a dose of V24, brings Soldier Boy to Herogasm to kill Homelander. During the altercation, America’s strongest superhero realizes his adversary is significantly stronger than the average human, raising the stakes, and they fist fight before attacking each other with laser vision. The duel ends when Soldier Boy interrupts by pulling Homelander down by his cape, and the vigilantes attack him together before the villain escapes.
The Boys’ “Herogasm” episode was based on the six-issue limited comic series of the same name by Garth Ennis, John McCrea and Keith Burns, but there are major differences between the show and the comics, including Vought’s involvement. In the comics, the corporation supported Herogasm and created a fake intergalactic battle that explained the absence of supes around the world. In the Prime Video series, there was no similar association and fewer heroes attended the event.
In the season finale, Butcher and Homelander temporarily become allies to defeat Soldier Boy despite their animosity toward each other, although where they stand in the upcoming Season 4 remains to be seen. Butcher actor Karl Urban commented on his excitement for the new season and the show’s further success, saying, “We’re thrilled to continue Butcher and the Boys’ fight against Homelander and the Seven as well as comment on the insane world we’re living in.”
All three seasons of The Boys are available to stream on Prime Video.
