My Dress-Up Darling was the big hit rom-com title of the Winter 2022 anime season — a charming seinen romance starring the genki girl Kitagawa Marin and her new cosplay partner, the hina doll enthusiast Gojo Wakana. In the span of 12 episodes, Marin and Gojo became best friends, made some great costumes together and generally proved that opposites really can attract.
However, for now, it’s over. There won’t be another season of My Dress-Up Darling any time soon, and the manga version updates slowly. Fortunately, fans of the “opposites attract” romantic paradigm can try author Agasawa Tea’s 100% free manga series You and I Are Polar Opposites — a series available on the Manga Plus app that feels like the next My Dress-Up Darling.
The Plot & Themes Of You And I Are Polar Opposites
Even if the charming manga series You and I Are Polar Opposites isn’t about cosplay or any particular hobby, its two main characters and their electric chemistry together should remind any anime fan of Marin and Gojo in My Dress-Up Darling, and all in a familiar high school setting. The story is mainly told through the eyes of Suzuki, a lively genki girl not unlike Marin, who isn’t nearly as superficial as her daily life at school would suggest. Instead, Suzuki has a deep and meaningful crush on her kuudere classmate Tani, as she understands that they are very different people and could easily enrich one another’s lives.
It’s almost like she has meta-knowledge of how on-screen chemistry works, and what’s more, Suzuki admires Tani’s steadfast personal authenticity. Suzuki doesn’t like it when people become someone they’re not to please others — it’s all about what’s on the inside, and the attractive confidence to be oneself no matter what others think. That takes courage, and Suzuki loves Tani’s own brand of courage.
The two of them soon strike up an unlikely friendship, and as hoped, their totally opposite natures give them strong on-screen chemistry. Suzuki is much more talkative and energetic than Tani, but Tani doesn’t find that annoying — he secretly finds it endearing, and in fact, he fears that he is boring by comparison. He’s more insecure than Suzuki realizes, but his faith in himself remains unmoved, which helps keep Suzuki interested in him. In short, the two characters are good for one another, with Suzuki giving Tani fun, adventure and new friends in his daily life while Tani can inspire Suzuki to have more self-confidence and build her self-esteem on her deepest ideals, beliefs and hobbies.
This is just like Gojo and Marin in My Dress-Up Darling, with each of them being different halves of a much greater whole. Marin helped Gojo explore the world of cosplay and stoke his passion for fabric, while Gojo helped Marin gain technical knowledge on cosplay and fabric. It was a business partnership, a friendship and a romance all in one.
Where To Read Polar Opposites & Similar Manga Titles Online
Fans of My Dress-Up Darling can find the You and I Are Polar Opposites manga on the Manga Plus website or mobile app, and every single chapter is permanently free to read, as this manga has not yet been published elsewhere. The series currently has six chapters available, with new material releasing every week and the next update coming at 10:00 AM CST on July 10th. It is not yet clear if You and I Are Polar Opposites will get a print manga release, though there is a precedent for that, with similar Manga Plus titles later getting a print release in the West, such as Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible.
For now, there’s not a lot of You and I Are Total Opposites material out there, so once My Dress-Up Darling fans get caught up, they can try even more manga series that are in a similar vein. Many shonen and seinen romances involve a quiet, self-insert male lead and a colorful, attractive female love interest, and Manga Plus offers much more of that. Another recommended title is Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! — a free manga series that has a loosely similar premise as both My Dress-Up Darling and You and I Are Total Opposites. From there, fans can also try the charming series Don’t Blush, Sekime-San! and Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible, with the former being free and the latter having a more limited release. All of them should help scratch the My Dress-Up Darling itch.
