Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth has revealed that the film includes a bizarre love triangle between the titular god of thunder and… his weapons.
Hemsworth went into detail about how the absurd lovers’ quarrel between Thor’s weapons came to be during a press conference discussing the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film. “That was kinda one of the funnest things we got to do in the film,” Hemsworth shared. “Look, it’s hard to see the ex-girlfriend turn up dressed as him; that’s a shock. All of a sudden, the weapon that he held so dear and so on for so many years now belongs to someone else, and then he has Stormbreaker, who starts to sense a little jealously there. So that kind of evolved through the film, didn’t it. I don’t think it was in the original script, but it was fun.”
Mjolnir was the iconic weapon Thor wielded from his MCU debut until it was destroyed by Hela (Cate Blanchett) in Thor: Ragnarok. During his quest to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Thor — with the help of dwarven blacksmith Eitri, Adolescent Groot, Rocket Raccoon and the revived power of a dying star — created a replacement in the form of the axe Stormbreaker. While the weapon would serve Thor well during the events of the Infinity films, he was noticeably nostalgic when briefly reunited with Mjolnir during Endgame‘s Time Heist.
Pertinently, Love and Thunder will see the proper return of Mjolnir, now wielded by Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Thor’s other ex… the one who isn’t a hammer. Given how quickly Thor seemed to have rebounded from his hammer after losing it, it only makes sense that there would be some jealousy between the two all-powerful semi-sentient weapons forged from the heart of a dying star. However, the pair’s rivalry is unlikely to last too long, and an official poster for Love and Thunder even shows Stormbreaker and Mjolnir side-by-side.
One thing MCU fans might be wondering about Mjolnir is just how it managed to get repaired after its destruction. While it would make sense that Eitri would be the individual responsible for repairing the hammer, Christian Bale, who plays villain Gorr the God Butcher, recently revealed the weapon forger’s portrayer, Peter Dinklage, won’t appear in the film despite filming scenes with him. “I got to work with Peter Dinklage, that’s not in the final film,” Bale said at the time. “I got to work with him, and he’s fantastic. I got to work with Jeff Goldblum (the Grandmaster in Ragnarok), he’s not in the final film either. As you see, lots of stuff ends up on the cutting room floor, even though it is beautiful, brilliant stuff.”
Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8.
