Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) recognizes Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) as Captain America in footage from Avengers: Quantum Encounter, the Marvel short film that accompanies the experience at Disney’s new Wish cruise ship.
Shared online, the footage from Quantum Encounter unites the two Captains. The new Captain America offers his thanks to Captain Marvel, with Earth’s Mightiest Hero replying, “You’re welcome, Cap.” An extended version of this scene also sees the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Sam Wilson meet Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) for the first time. Notably, though, Quantum Encounter is said to be adjacent to the main MCU, taking place in an alternate timeline where Thanos’ snap never happened. In addition to Captain Marvel and Captain America, the film prominently features Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne/the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly).
Mackie made his MCU debut as Sam Wilson/the Falcon in the 2014 film Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the sequel to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Mackie subsequently reprised his role in the films Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Ant-Man (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Endgame seemingly concluded with the original Captain America, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), passing the mantle to Sam.
Like his comic book counterpart before him, the MCU’s Sam Wilson officially became the new Captain America in Marvel Studios’ Disney+ original series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which ran from March 2021 to April 2021. Mackie is set to reprise his role as newly-christened franchise lead Sam Wilson in Marvel Studios’ fourth Captain America film, which currently lacks an official title and release window.
Meanwhile, Larson joined the MCU as Carol Danvers in the 2019 film Captain Marvel, subsequently reprising her role opposite Mackie later that year in Endgame. Larson is set to appear opposite Teyonah Parris and the aforementioned Vellani in Captain Marvel‘s upcoming sequel, The Marvels, which is scheduled for release on July 28, 2023. In the meantime, Vellani currently stars as Kamala Khan on Disney+’s Ms. Marvel, which is set to drop its Season 1 finale in just a couple of weeks on Wednesday, July 13.
