Ms. Marvel‘s AvengerCon scene gets an official Easter egg breakdown courtesy of Marvel.
Marvel published a complete list of every single reference hidden in Ms. Marvel‘s AvengerCon on the company’s official website. The event is showcased during Episode 1, “Generation Why,” in the first season of the Disney+ series, and features as a convention within the Marvel Cinematic Universe celebrating Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and their various exploits.
As the scene unfolds, viewers can catch glimpses of all manner of Avengers-themed merchandise and paraphernalia, as well as a few explanations to some major questions fans have been asking for years. The first and most prominent of these Easter eggs is that the convention is held at Camp Lehigh, where Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers was transformed into Captain America. Further references include advertisements for the book I Was There…, the memoir of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent present during the Avengers’ final battle with Thanos.
Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah previously discussed the process of bringing AvengerCon to life on the small screen. “Well, it was inspired by the real Comic-Cons, and it was the most fun set that we’ve ever been on,” El Arbi said. Fallah added, “The extras, actually, were real fans. There were real cosplay artists. We also did a lot of research on Comic-Cons, so we found a lot of cool costumes we wanted to incorporate.”
Fans have also found plenty of Easter eggs on their own outside of Ms. Marvel‘s AvengerCon, as various posters and iconic articles of clothing from the Ms. Marvel comics have made their way onto the series. While the show has paid homage to the original comics, this is bolstered by Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani’s own status as a Marvel super-fan. Ms. Marvel co-creator Sana Amanat commented on how Vellani’s love for all things Marvel helped her get the role of Kamala Khan in the first place. “She showed me every corner of her room, and it was covered with Avengers,” Amanat said. “Then she said, ‘Oh wait, I’m not done,’ opened up her closet, and there was more Marvel everywhere.”
Based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, Ms. Marvel follows 16-year-old Kamala Khan’s struggles to find her place in the world as both a teenager and a superhero. Early reactions to the first two episodes of the Disney+ series have lauded its tone, with many fans comparing it to 2017’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. El Arbi has previously remarked on the influence of the MCU’s Spider-Man films Ms. Marvel.
“In the same way you see Tom Holland as Peter Parker evolve… that’s the bar, basically,” he said. “For us, personally, it’s a masterpiece of a movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home. The bar is now so high. It just inspires us and also the other people involved in Ms. Marvel, to be like, ‘What can we do to try to reach that goal one day?’”
Ms. Marvel premiered on Disney+ on June 8. New episodes release every Wednesday.
