After the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan fled to Tatooine, which is where we find him at the start of Obi-Wan Kenobi. While on the desert planet, Kenobi spends his time watching over a young Luke Skywalker. Despite his best efforts trying to keep a low profile, Obi-Wan is constantly being hunted by the Empire’s Sith Inquisitors. During these difficult times, Obi-Wan may find himself reunited with a character who decided to rethink his life after trying to sell the former Jedi Master death sticks many years ago.
Elan Sel’Sabagno, also known as Elan Sleazebaggano in the non-canon run of Star Wars Legends, was a drug dealer who sold a variety of illicit substances to the citizens of Coruscant. He eventually began selling death sticks to patrons at the Outlander Nightclub, with one of them being Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. When he attempts to do so, the Jedi Knight uses a mind trick on him in order to convince him to rethink his life. Elan then leaves the nightclub to rethink his life choices.
Sel’Sabagno’s future has two different outcomes in both the Disney canon and Legends. In canon, after rethinking his life, Sel’Sabagno turned his life around, got off the drugs and eventually married and had a son, who can be seen in the background of a panel from Star War Adventures. Meanwhile, in Legends, while he never seemed to get married, he did swear off substance abuse and later became an advocate for rehabilitation on Coruscant. Now how will Obi-Wan possibly run into Elan?
Obi-Wan is no stranger to bars, nightclubs or places where trouble lurks around the corner. As shown in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Obi-Wan was familiar with the cantina in Mos Eisley, which he claimed was a “wretched hive of scum and villainy.” How would he know this? It could be that Kenobi either frequented the cantina, or at least passed by it in his early days on the desert planet. During one of these visits, he may have had an encounter with Sel’Sabagno.
Seeing how recent Disney+ series, such as The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett like to fit in fan service with its storytelling, there is a possibility that Disney could do the same thing in Obi-Wan Kenobi. While the former Jedi Master is hiding from the Empire, he could have a run in with the former drug dealer. If they do meet, Elan could tell Obi-Wan how he helped him become substance free and explain how he turned his life around for the better. This would be a heartwarming moment that would help balance the overall bleak and stressful tone of the series.
Even though Elan Sel’Sabagno was only on-screen for a few seconds, he became a fan-favorite within the Star Wars community. Given Disney’s track record of bringing in popular characters from other media, such as The Clone Wars, there is a chance that fans may see a reunion between Elan and Kenobi. With the first episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi streaming on Disney+, fans can rejoice at the return of popular characters such as Darth Vader. Despite not many expecting him to appear, having Elan make an appearance would not only further expand his story, but would also be wholesome to see Obi-Wan have a positive interaction with someone while being a hunted man.
To see if a reformed Elan makes an appearance, watch Obi-Wan Kenobi, streaming now on Disney+.
