Karl Urban Has a Mixed, Humorous Response to Wolverine Fan Casting

The Boys star Karl Urban responds to the calls from fans asking him to play a new take on X-Men’s Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Karl Urban, the star of Amazon’s The Boys, gives a mixed but humorous response to being fan-cast as Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking to The Guardian, Urban was asked about a Reddit search for his name in which hundreds of fan art pieces with his likeness as the popular X-Men character popped up. “It’s flattering, but you have to rationally think about it,” said Urban. “I’m what, two years younger than Hugh Jackman? I mean, if I was a studio looking to cast someone as Wolverine, I’d pick someone I’ll get three films out of. You’re not going to get three films out of Karl Urban unless you want a 65-year-old Wolverine.”

Between Hugh Jackman’s exit from the role in the critically-acclaimed Logan and Disney’s acquisition of Fox’s Marvel properties in 2019, fans have been dream-casting the MCU’s Wolverine. Actors envisioned in the role include John Wick‘s Keanu Reeves and Kingman‘s Taron Egerton. One of the most popular choices is Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, who also addressed the idea of donning Logan’s Adamantium claws. “This is something that comes up every so often — because in the comics Wolverine is short, so every so often everyone’s like ‘Who’s a short actor?’ — but there’s never been any actual truth to it,” said Radcliffe. “Every so often I get bored of answering questions sensibly so I just make a joke like I did the other day, and that has sort of reignited the rumors a bit.”

In addition to Wolverine, fans also wanted Urban as the titular character in Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off, Kraven the Hunter, before Aaron Taylor-Johnson was announced for the role. The actor has previously portrayed the Asgardian warrior Skurge in Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok in 2017.

Urban reprises his role as Billy Butcher on Amazon’s The Boys: Season 3. The latest installment of the superhero satire will see Butcher receive new superpowers to take on The Seven, but these abilities will create some inner conflict for the anti-hero vigilante. “That’s the dilemma: does Butcher become a superhero or a super villain?” said Urban. “In order to defeat the monster, do you become the monster? And I think that’s one of the cool things about this season is every character is faced with that choice. How far are they willing to go? What line are they willing to cross in order to achieve what they want to achieve?”

The Boys: Season 3 arrives on Amazon Prime Video on June 3.
