Liam Neeson Returns as Qui-Gon in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi

Lucasfilm announces the long-rumored Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, an animated anthology series set during the fan-favorite era of The Old Republic.

Lucasfilm and Disney announced Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, a new animated series coming to Disney+.

Unveiled during Star Wars Celebration 2022, the anthology series will chronicle the adventures of the Jedi Order during The Old Republic, including shorts focusing on Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku. Liam Neeson will also return to voice the Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jinn, a character he first portrayed in 1999’s The Phantom Menace. The stories focusing on Ahsoka will chart different parts of her life, while those focusing on Dooku will also feature a young Qui-Gon, voiced by Neeson’s son, and will be significantly darker in tone.

Tales of the Jedi was a comic book series published by Dark Horse between 1993 and 1998. While the stories, which are set thousands of years before the Skywalker Saga, are now considered to be a part of Star Wars Legacy canon, the comics consisted of several distinct chapters. These include Knights of the Old Republic, The Freedon Nadd Uprising, Dark Lords of the Sith, The Sith War, The Golden Age of the Sith, The Fall of the Sith Empire and Redemption. It’s currently unknown whether the Tales of the Jedi series will directly adapt these arcs or tell original stories.

The popularity of the Tales of the Jedi comics resulted in several major spinoff projects, most notably the iconic RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Developed by Bioware and released in 2003, the game chronicled the events of the Jedi Order as it desperately seeks the map to an ancient weapon known as the Star Forge. Knights of the Old Republic was followed by a sequel, The Sith Lords, in 2004 and the popular MMO The Old Republic which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary.

Tales of the Jedi will be the second Star Wars anthology developed for Disney+ following the release of Star Wars: Visions in September 2021. That series, which saw Lucasfilm collaborate with a variety of popular anime studios, sought to capture the galaxy far, far away through a uniquely Japanese lens. While Visions was a hit with critics, fans were mixed on its reinterpretation of the Star Wars universe, many citing its uneven storytelling and hit-or-miss English voice acting. Despite this, Star Wars: Visions Season 2 is reportedly in development and expected to release in 2022.

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in late 2022.
