An iconic Marvel character returns in human form during the final moments of Hulk vs. Thor: Banner of War Alpha #1 by writer Donny Cates.
The following contains spoilers for Hulk vs. Thor: Banner of War Alpha #1, now on sale from Marvel Comics
During the final moments of Hulk vs. Thor: Banner of War Alpha #1, Marvel resurrects Odin from the dead as he appears on Starship Hulk.
Hulk vs. Thor: Banner of War Alpha #1 comes from writer Donny Cates, artist Martin Coccolo, color artist Matt Wilson and letterer VC’s Joe Sabino. The issue marks the start of Marvel’s “Banner of War” event, which sees the Incredible Hulk take on the God of Thunder in battle after Bruce Banner seemingly killed 17 people at an incident in El Paso. During a duel on the Black Hand of God arena, Odin — who’s soul is currently inside Mjolnir — tells his son he senses another presence inside Hulk. Odin tells Thor to let him loose because he has an idea. Thor does so as he throws Mjolnir at Hulk, the blast then hitting the green-skinned giant square in the chest.
Aboard Starship Hulk, Banner also feels the blast. Thrown away from his equipment, Banner gets up only to find himself standing face-to-face with Odin, who has appeared aboard the vessel in human form. While Odin’s return may only be confined to the space within Starship Hulk at this time, his appearance to Banner means that someone besides Thor is now aware the former king of Asgard is still alive.
Thor’s father previously sacrificed during Cates and artist Nic Klein’s “God of Thunder” saga so he could transfer the Odin-Force to his son. Everyone has since presumed Odin dead and held a massive funeral for the character in Thor #24; however, Marvel has since revealed that Odin’s spirit now lives inside Mjolnir. Thor #24 further reveals that Odin didn’t intend to remain in Mjolnir and tried to enter Valhalla, but found the afterlife was completely empty upon his arrival there.
The “Banner of War” event continues on May 18 with Thor #25. The synopsis for the issue reads, “The 60th Anniversary celebration — and Thor and Hulk’s epic rivalry — continues in the second installment of the crossover between the HULK and THOR series! Banner’s newfound control of his rage is prolonging this fight more than Thor expected, and with Banner holding his own, Thor must get creative. Odin’s breakthrough look into Banner’s psyche seems to slow the violence, but will it be enough? Additionally, new creators to the THOR title bring glimpses into the possible futures of Thor and his friends!”
Hulk vs. Thor: Banner of War Alpha #1 features cover art by Gary Frank and Brad Anderson, with variant cover art by Coccolo, Wilson, Ron Lim, Israel Silva, Geoff Shaw, Federico Blee, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, Romulo Fajardo Jr., Trevor Von Eeden and Federico Blee. The issue is on sale now from Marvel.
