Aharen-San is Indecipherable is a lovely new rom-com anime series of the Spring 2022 anime season, and this show’s two main characters, Raido and Aharen Reina, didn’t take long to develop a wholesome but understated friendship and possible romance in the story. They’re both quiet about it, but actions tend to speak louder than words.
In the span of five episodes, both Aharen and Raido developed their own rhythm and idiosyncrasies as best friends, and by now, other characters are starting to take notice, from their enthusiastic history teacher to Aharen’s dandere friend Oshiro. Soon enough, Raido and Aharen’s classmates might start to get nosy about this, and Aharen and Raido should get themselves ready for that.
How Aharen And Raido Express Their Affection
Some anime lovers such as Kitagawa Marin use their words to express friendship and affection, while characters such as Honda Tohru aren’t afraid to explain themselves in intimate detail through monologues and grand gestures of affection. Then there’s Aharen Reina the kuudere, whose whisper-quiet voice inspired the anime’s name.
Instead of shojo-style love confessions, Aharen Reina is all about wordless gestures and gifts to show her affection to Raido, from protecting his modesty to giving him free plushie toys from arcade claw games, not to mention feeding him meatballs at lunch or studying with him. In fact, Aharen tends to scoot her desk close to Raido’s and study right next to him, pressed right up next to her larger friend with no self-consciousness at all. Aharen isn’t afraid to get close.
Aharen and Raido both seem to understand that love comes in many forms, few of which actually require words. An example is the five love languages, and Aharen and Raido have already used all of them, including gift-giving, spending quality time together walking down the street and making gestures of helpful service to one another.
Notably, even if Aharen and Raido are both quiet kuudere characters who are a long way off from saying “I love you,” they have no qualms about speaking these five love languages in public, where their classmates, Oshiro and pedestrians on the street can see them. Aharen may be quiet and timid, but she’s also more assertive than she looks, and her gestures of affection grow louder with each passing scene. She and Raido are sure to become the topic of some serious gossip and speculation before long.
When Aharen’s Love Live Comes Under Scrutiny
For now, only two side characters in Aharen-San is Indecipherable have taken notice of the love languages being spoken between Aharen and Raido, but it’s likely that many more characters will soon catch on as well. If Aharen and Raido keep making these loving gestures to one another in public, everyone else is sure to catch on, and they’ll have some questions. No one would miss Aharen being held in Raido’s arm during a lecture or Aharen hugging Raido as gratitude for all he does for her.
So far, Aharen’s dandere friend Oshiro felt a bit jealous of this relationship back in Episode 2 until Raido and Oshiro came to an understanding. Oshiro has yet to return, but if she does, no doubt she’ll sense the wordless kuudere sparks flying between her friends, and she might actually help them get together if she deems Raido worthy. Meanwhile, Aharen and Raido’s teacher immediately spotted the special bond between these characters, likening it to a classical Japanese love story complete with illustrations of feudal-era romances.
No doubt the other girls in Aharen’s class will soon join in the fun and ask Aharen all about it, and most likely, Aharen will either misunderstand them or give a quiet, indecipherable response that only piques everyone’s curiosity further. At the same time, a few of the boys might ask Raido why he spends so much time with Aharen and ask if they’re going out. Raido is more likely to understand the question and answer clearly, and this may prompt him to think long and hard about what he and Aharen are to each other.
Once he finds his answer, he is sure to return the favor after all the gestures of kindness Aharen has done for him, from meatballs to plushies and studying together. The possibilities are endless, especially if Raido isn’t afraid to make these romantic gestures in front of his classmates. He has nothing to be embarrassed about.
