With the Moon Knight finale sure to solidify a new evolution for the hero, its latest trailer has offered some previously unknown abilities for the Fist of Vengeance. Among his supernatural abilities, Moon Knight may have also mastered a classic form of transportation, flight. But even though the ability is new to the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s actually a clever nod to the hero’s standard mode of transportation.
In his early appearances up until the early 2000s, Moon Knight always used a helicopter or a crescent-shaped ship to get across the city. In the past, it felt like another one of his clever gadgets that he’d use to maintain his efficiency and image. But as he lost his resources and eventually his money, it felt like the last vestiges of an era of Moon Knight that would never return. Nevertheless, it was always a clever way to showcase how resourceful the hero was and how he always had a trick or two up his sleeves.
The trailer for the finale continued its tradition of nodding to the past in a new way as two shots were shown with Moon Knight rising to the sky. In the first shot, he rises to the sky, with his cape in the shape of his crescent ship, and the second shot sees him flying towards a pyramid. Ironically, these abilities would have seemed impossible or hard to believe in the comics, as the character was so grounded in reality. But in the show, flight only further showcases how Marvel Studios has committed to making the character believable in this universe.
Rather than make Moon Knight exactly as he was in the books, creators leaned more into a supernatural angle and shifted the character’s lore to better accommodate that. As a result, seeing the character in flight is far more in line with what has been shown in the past, whereas he with a helicopter or glider feels like the more unbelievable option. However, even the massive shift in how he gets around still has room to remind comic fans of its inspiration.
Another unique aspect of his new ability to fly is how it mirrors Marc Spector’s (Oscar Isaac) drive to stop the enemy. Where his legs may fail him, he simply took to the skies to make up for lost time. Nothing could stop him in his pursuit of vengeance and justice. While the series has teased his brutality against evil in battles, these images may be the most overt in that he’s borderline unstoppable when determined to stop any wrongdoing.
Moon Knight has made some unique changes to how the character’s abilities work. But whether he has supernatural strength or the ability to fly instead of a ship, his foundation is still rooted in the comics. Because of this, when fans see Moon Knight take to the skies in the finale, whether in the real world or a fabrication of the afterlife, they may also be reminded of how he used to get around in his early years.
