The new logo for Avatar: The Way of Water emerges online, ahead of the hotly-anticipated sci-fi sequel’s theatrical release on Dec. 16, 2022.
The official logo for James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water surfaced online.
Blogger Erik Davis tweeted the title treatment for the upcoming sequel, which eschews the much-maligned Papyrus-like font used for the original movie’s logo. Instead, the updated logo uses a blocky font complete with a stylized ‘A’ incorporating what appears to be the winged Toruk creature featured in the first Avatar.
Disney and 20th Century Studios announced Avatar 2‘s title at CinemaCon 2022. The presentation also confirmed rumors that Avatar: The Way of Water‘s trailer will be attached to Doctor Strange 2 and will therefore screen in theaters from May 6. This will mark the first time audiences have glimpsed new footage of the long-gestating Avatar follow-up, which Cameron has been working on (alongside three other sequels) since 2010.
The real-world break between Avatar outings mirrors a similar time jump in The Way of Water‘s plot. “Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure,” reads the official description.
Producer Jon Landau has since confirmed that all four Avatar sequels will tell standalone stories. According to the producer, each installment will have its own fully formed narrative with a defined beginning, middle and end. That said, Landau also promised that all five movies in the Avatar franchise will still focus on Jake Sully, Neytiri and their family, forming a sweeping, overarching story when watched in order.
20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell previously echoed Landau’s comments, while also addressing concerns that the 13-year gap between Avatar movies could hurt The Way of Water‘s box office prospects. “This is not just a sequel, it’s a saga. And it’s a family saga,” Asbell said. “It will be compelling on its own, but it will also be extremely compelling to return to those characters and to see how they’ve evolved. It’s less about Avatar being a really big movie and more about how Avatar was a really important cultural moment for audiences. I don’t think it will be hard to convince people to come back.”
