Blake Lively To Adapt Scott Pilgrim Creator’s Graphic Novel, Seconds

Blake Lively is set to direct a film adaptation of the graphic novel Seconds from author and Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lively made her directorial debut with the music video for Taylor Swift’s “I Bet You Think About Me” in 2021, but Seconds will be Lively’s first feature film for Spotlight. Edgar Wright, who adapted O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World in 2010, is involved with the Seconds project as well, writing the script and serving as a producer along with Marc Platt.

Seconds was first published by Ballantine Books, an imprint of Random House in 2014 and follows Katie Clay, a head chef at a restaurant named Seconds, who learns a “do-over” spell that allows her to fix all of her past mistakes by writing them down, eating a mushroom and going to sleep. However, her eagerness to write her wrongs with her new ability creates new problems that threaten not only to unravel her life as she knows it but space and time as well.

Seconds was O’Malley’s first graphic novel since his Scott Pilgrim series in 2004, which consisted of six volumes: Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness, Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together, Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe and Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour. Wright co-wrote and directed adapted the series into the 2010 film, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which he co-wrote and directed. The film featured a star-studded cast, including Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Brandon Routh and Anna Kendrick. Though Scott Pilgrim vs. the World had a less-than-ideal box office performance, it went on to win several awards and eventually became a cult classic film.

Details surrounding Seconds, such as a cast or release date, are currently unknown. As for the Scott Pilgrim franchise, it was announced in January that the graphic novels would receive an anime adaptation co-produced by Netflix and UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group. The series will be co-written and executive produced by O’Malley along with BenDavid Grabinski, who will both serve as co-showrunners as well.

However, Scott Pilgrim‘s animated series had not yet received a full series order at the time it was announced. It remains unclear if it was one of Netflix’s animated projects affected by the recent firing of Phil Rynda, Netflix’s Director of Creative Leadership and Development for Original Animation, which led to the cancellation of several animated series, as well as projects that were still in development.

Directed by Blake Lively and co-written by Edgar Wright, Seconds does not have a release date.
