Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has promised a multitude of possibilities and mysteries. But until those answers come, there is still an immense amount of room for speculation, theories and Easter eggs in the various trailers, promos and featurettes. In fact, one of the latest looks at the film unearthed a detail that may give importance to Strange’s broken watch that he often wears while in costume.
According to Reddit theorist vaibhav_10_2, the doorway that led to the strange dimension of floating platforms may open by Strange’s watch. The reasoning behind this is that the massive hatch used to open the door revealed the watch right at the center of the handle. The location has been the focus of even more speculation because it’s a new realm never before mentioned in previous films. But with the added detail of the watch, there’s still the mystery of what it uncovers.
One possible explanation for why the watch opened the doorway is because the realm that he, America Chavez and Christine Palmer were in was a location designed by Strange, perhaps something similar to a mind palace or the Mirror Dimension. There, he could conduct spells or organize his thoughts without outside interference. However, another explanation could be that this location is actually a Nexus Point, which would allow him to travel to other dimensions without risk, or at the very least, peer into them safely.
Strange’s watch has also held great significance to the character. Before the accident, Strange picks the one Christine gave to him out of an entire collection. And despite its cracks, he still wears it to remind him of his humility and as a way to keep his love close to him at all times. Since a potential variant of Christine and America Chavez are with him in this dimension, it’s possible that the door he opened wasn’t for the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Strange. Instead, it could be a dimension for one of his many variants, which still held their own connection to Christine.
Whether on the run from the Illuminati or searching for their own answers, the watch may have opened up a chance to buy them some time. But if the location is truly a manifestation created by Strange, it could serve as a visual example of how much stronger the sorcerer has gotten. That said, that would also indicate how powerful his enemies would have to be to challenge him. For example, if this location were a dreamscape, a villain like Nightmare would be the only one who could dare to infiltrate it. And if not, then whomever the film’s main antagonist could be would also likely challenge Strange on an equal or more powerful level.
With so much left to understand, these theories have only proven to get more and more detailed. But the Easter eggs and hidden details also aid in building speculation and excitement. As a result, even Strange’s watch has garnered otherworldly significance and proven that everything is connected unless proven otherwise. Whether significant or not, Strange’s watch playing a role in the film is both a great callback and ideal evolution for the item.
Find out what’s behind the mysterious door in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in theaters on May 6.
