Anthony Mackie shares a shooting update on the Twisted Metal series and teases what fans can expect from it.
Mackie revealed to Extra TV that he was eating a lot of vegetables and chicken breasts in preparation for Captain America 4 and revealed the development stage of the new vehicular combat series. “My new project Twisted Metal is gonna be on Peacock,” Mackie said. “I’m about to start shooting that. And if you remember the video game, it’s just us driving cars and blowing stuff up and trying to make it to New San Francisco.”
NBCUniversal announced that the live-action adaptation of Twisted Metal would be coming to Peacock and expressed excitement for having secured Mackie’s talent. The show was described as an adrenaline-infused comedy series, and it’s being developed by Sony Pictures Television, Playstation Productions and Universal Television. The Twisted Metal franchise has been around for over 25 years, spanning PlayStation video games throughout its multiple generations and comic books from DC. The franchise is known for its mayhem and vehicles tricked out with all different types of deadly weapons and special features to give the driver advantages over their competitors.
Mackie has been cast as John Doe for the series, a fast-talking smart-ass milkman who drives like a speed demon and doesn’t remember his past. He gets the opportunity to fulfill his dream of finding community, but in order to do so, he’ll first have to survive a deadly game of vehicular battle. The character has been described as complex, funny and compelling, and the original concept for the show came from Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
The actor’s also prepping for his other big project, Captain America 4, and Mackie has hinted that he’s getting in the headspace for Sam Wilson by listening to Tupac’s “Hit ‘Em Up.” He chooses a song to represent every character he plays, but in this case, Mackie actually played the late west coast rapper in the 2009 biopic Notorious. The sequel will take place after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier with Sam claiming the iconic shield as his own. The show’s creator, Malcolm Spellman, and a writer from the show, Dalan Musson, will be writing the script that will see Sam finding his place in his new role as Captain America.
Mackie will also executive produce the Twisted Metal series along with Will Arnett, Marc Forman, Jason Spire, Peter Principato, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan and Hermen Hulst, as well as Reese and Wernick. Cobra Kai story editor and staff writer Michael Johnson Smith is also in on the action, producing and writing the series.
The Twisted Metal series doesn’t currently have a release date on Peacock.
