Justice League’s Most Powerful Magician Was Just Embarrassed by a Child

In Truth and Justice, one of the Justice League’s most powerful magic-users suffered a terrible embarrassment at the hands of a child.

Zatanna is one of the most skilled magic-users in the DC universe, and one of the Justice League’s most powerful members. Her expertise and wisdom has allowed her to fight and triumph over many supernatural villains, from the Upside-Down Man to Eclipso, and even cosmic tyrants such as Darkseid. However, in Truth & Justice #19 (by Preeti Chhibber, Lalit Kumar Sharma, and Wendy Broome), Zatanna meets her match and is completely embarrassed…by a child.

The story “Dream a Little Dream” throws Zee into a dreamscape from which she cannot escape. She wakes up in a toy castle in her pajamas, and none of her spells work. She can’t change clothes or teleport, and she stumbles upon a kid playing with toy soldiers. He asks if he made Zee, making her think he’s the mastermind of this fabricated world.

The child doesn’t appear to be nefarious in nature and is actually gentle, and kind, leaving Zatanna lost and confused as to what is really going on. He reveals that his name is John, hinting that whatever force is at play could be manipulating the magic-user’s mind as she loves John Constantine.

John teleports her to a water park, a train ride and then to Space Camp Park, magically placing her iconic costume on her to show he’s truly the god of this domain. Zatanna, as scared as she is, is curious, as the child talks about losing his father.

The child’s father apparently went to space and never returned, and John has constructed this world in an effort to fill an emotional gap. As they float on benches in outer space and pop over to various rides, John also mentions a mother, so there’s a chance that this mystery woman could be behind the illusion as well.

Sadly, Zatanna can’t decipher the ruse or who’s really behind her plight, leaving her clueless as to this child’s role in her predicament. The facade gets deadly when the ground opens up and swallows the depowered magician whole. Although the situation looks bleak for the magic wielding Justice Leaguer, there’s a sense of hope as it appears that both Superman and Batman have found her body in the real world, by the end of the issue.
