Lobo Just Reunited With His Daughter

Lobo just had the chance to build new bridges with his daughter Crush — and he took the opportunity to put her in a lot of trouble.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Crush and Lobo #3 from DC Comics, on sale now

The DC Universe is full of different familial connections. While some like Superman and his son Jon are strong and others like Batman and his son Damian are strained, there are few as openly hostile and aggressive as the one between Lobo and Crush. The pair finally had the chance to start building bridges with one another, but one of them just threw everything into disarray.

Lobo and Crush’s latest meeting in Lobo and Crush #3 by Mariko Tamaki, Amancay Nahuelpan, Tamra Bonvillain and Ariana Maherjust went very poorly for the pair, with Lobo openly betraying his daughter in one of the worst ways possible.

Lobo and Crush

Lobo and Crush already have a pretty strained relationship. The half-Czarnian daughter of Lobo, Crush was primarily raised on Earth. Although she developed a fight-heavy personality that would make her father proud, Crush also proved to be a more naturally friendly and even heroic figure than he ever was. Joining Damian Wayne’s incarnation of the Teen Titans, Crush learned to open up to her teammates — befriending Red Arrow and Roundhouse while developing feelings for Djinn. She was briefly taken over by her father during the events of “Year of the Villain,” but broke free thanks to her teammates and was able to even bring the fight to her father.

Since then, Crush has ended up on her own after leaving the Titans. She’s also found herself in the unexpected position of having to potentially forgive her father for his transgressions, as he’s reached out with an apparent olive branch. Trapped in an intergalactic prison, Lobo has been forced to go through group therapy and seems to be growing as a person. He asks to speak with Crush in person, so they can begin to build bridges. Despite her reservations, Crush decides to take him up on the offer and visit him.

Crush in Custody

Arriving at the prison and sitting in the visitor’s area across from her father, Crush finds Lobo talkative and surprisingly open. He tells her he’s happy to see a part of himself still free in the universe and recommends speaking with the therapy robots in the prison. Crush seems taken in by the argument, at least in theory. Lobo forces her to shake his hand and she leaves to get snacks — unaware that Lobo had quietly swapped their DNA signatures during the handshake. This means the automated robotic guards recognize Lobo as the visitor and Crush as the prisoner. Lobo is able to walk right out the front door of the prison laughing, while his daughter is trapped in his cell and told she’ll be completing his lengthy sentence.

It’s clear that Lobo’s attempts to seem friendly and caring for his daughter were all a ruse, designed to lure her into taking his place within the prison system. While this means Lobo is free once more to bring chaos to the universe (which might be more difficult now that many worlds are coming together to form the United Planets), it also likely shoots down any chance he had of having a good relationship with his daughter.

While this might not bother Lobo too much, it does destroy any chance Crush likely had in seeing him as anything other than a scumbag, and will likely send her on the warpath to get even with the man who left her behind again. If Crush can find out how to escape her new predicament, it wouldn’t be surprising to see her hunt down the Main Man. And with her own strength and healing capabilities being impressive enough to keep up with his, Crush might be the one person with the powers (and fury) to finally try to find a way to bring Lobo down once and for all.
