Dark Horse Comics announces the release of Black Hammer: Reborn, a sequel to Jeff Lemire’s expansive comic book pastiche.
Dark Horse Comics has announced that superstar writer Jeff Lemire will return to the world of Black Hammer with the upcoming Black Hammer: Reborn.
The publisher shared a tweet promoting the upcoming series, writing, “Return to #BlackHammer! The Eisner Award-winning superhero saga is back in Black Hammer: Reborn, picking up 20 years after we last saw our heroes.” The comic will be written by Lemire with art by Caitlin Yarsky, coloring by Dave Stewart and lettering by Nate Piekos. Yarsky will also draw the cover to the first issue, with a variant by Lemire.
According to Dark Horse, Reborn will take place twenty years after the conclusion to Black Hammer: Age of Doom. It follows Lucy Weber, who has now moved to the suburbs, started a family and has quit being the superhero Black Hammer. However, new threats to Spiral City will force Lucy to pick up her father’s hammer again, while readers uncover the mystery of why she gave it up in the first place.
Debuting in 2016, Black Hammer asked the question of what happens to superheroes after they are retconned out of existence. It followed the story of a group of costumed heroes – Abraham Slam, Golden Gail, the Barbalien, Colonel Weird and Madame Dragonfly – who become trapped in the small town of Rockwood after a climactic battle against a world-ending threat. As they investigate the mystery of where they are and how they can return home, Lucy Weber, a journalist and the daughter of one of the missing heroes, tries to do the same from the city they left behind.
Lemire discussed Reborn in an interview with CBR. “This is very much that daughter’s story living in [her father’s] shadow,” he said. “Black Hammer has always been more about real world dilemmas than superhero ones, so being able to tell a more contemporary story of a mother and a wife and someone struggling to find their place in the world again was really appealing to me. Lucy had it all, and then she lost it. Now, she has a family that she loves, and that’s great too, but there is something missing, and that’s where our story begins.”
