Captain Marvel’s New Boyfriend Doctor Strange May Explain Her New Costume

In Captain Marvel #27 by Kelly Thompson and David Lopez, Carol Danvers starts a relationship with an Avenger that could explain her new costume.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Captain Marvel #27 by Kelly Thompson, David Lopez, Tríona Farrell and VC’s Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

In January, it was revealed that Captain Marvel would be donning a temporary new costume that was unlike anything she had worn before. This new outfit was more subtle, and it came with a hooded cape that signaled Carol Danvers was going to explore the mystical side of the Marvel Universe. The reasons for the costume change weren’t initially revealed. At first, it was believed that this new costume would come as a result of Carol’s Asgardian power-up, which came thanks to Thor’s future daughter, Brigid. However, those powers have since faded, and the costume had yet to come into account.

Well, the reason for the costume change might finally have been revealed in Captain Marvel #27, an issue that largely focuses on Carol getting over her recent break-up with James “Rhodey” Rhodes. In fact, Carol’s new outfit may come as a result of her new relationship with Doctor Strange.

In Captain Marvel #26, Carol Danvers returned to the present, after an extended period of time in the dystopian world of the year 2052. In this dark future, Carol met the future daughter of War Machine, a young woman who went only by Rhodes — and Carol was not her mother. When she was reunited with Rhodey, she decided to put an end to their relationship, so that Rhodey would have the chance to meet the future mother of his daughter, ensuring her existence in the future. It’s a difficult break-up for both superheroes — and in Captain Marvel #27, we see the toll this difficult decision has taken on Carol.

Eventually, Carol is convinced by Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, to get back out there. After an unsuccessful round of speed-dating, Carol ends up in a bar by herself — only to come across the Sorcerer Supreme, Stephen Strange. A spark is ignited between the two, and they end up spending the night together.

And while this is labeled a lapse in judgement on both their parts, the issue ends with the two of them kissing once again, showing this is the start of a new relationship between two of Marvel’s most powerful superheroes.

Now, the next issue in the series, Captain Marvel #28, is the chapter in which Carol’s new costume will debut — an outfit she can also be seen wearing alongside Doctor Strange in the just-revealed cover to Captain Marvel #29. Therefore, it stands to reason that Carol’s mystical new costume will come as a result of her relationship with Stephen Strange. After all, he is the Sorcerer Supreme, which means that their adventures together will most assuredly be mystical in nature. Better yet, Carol herself will start learning about magic, which means she will get some mystical powers of her own that will most likely be taught to her by Strange.

While we don’t yet know how long the relationship between the two will last, it looks like Carol will learn a whole lot about the mystical side of the Marvel Universe thanks to her new Avengers boyfriend.
