Lord Drakkon Reveals How His Exile Almost Broke Him

In the latest issue of Power Rangers, the Omega Rangers get a first hand look at the effects of Lord Drakkon’s exile in the creepiest way possible.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Power Rangers #4 by Ryan Parrott, Francesco Mortarino, Raul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire, on sale now.

No matter where they are, the Power Rangers are bound to see some dark places as they battle against the forces of evil. While the Mighty Morphin team deals with seemingly unstoppable new enemies on Earth, the Omega Rangers aren’t doing much better as they journey through the stars in search of any way to defeat the world ending Empyreals. Between the nearly endless string of monsters they keep coming across, it’s no surprise that some of the Rangers are dealing with things less well than others.

And in Power Rangers #4, the most powerful of their party, Lord Drakkon, has quite possibly been hit the hardest, despite his incredible strength. And he found a very strange way to cope in a dark dimension.

Zack has discovered an artificial Sentry made from discarded fabric and sports equipment. It isn’t the only one, as he and Trini soon come across a small army of them, all standing guard until it’s time to hail Lord Drakkon. The scene is unsettling, with the Sentries all hailing their master in front of his empty throne.

The tension is temporarily cut by Drakkon’s own sudden arrival, leaping through the crowd and cutting down the constructs in a frenzy. The former tyrant has always been a vicious fighter, yet this seems far more cathartic than anything else. When Drakkon is finished demolishing his creations, Trini asks how long he was trapped in this place, something he has no real way of knowing.

Time doesn’t work the way it should in this artificial world, and as such, Drakkon’s imprisonment may have felt like an eternity, even if it was only a matter of months or years. Drakkon isn’t particularly interested in discussing his experiences, and when he says the others couldn’t possibly comprehend them, he is for once telling the absolute truth.

Although this revelation does not redeem Drakkon or his actions during  Shattered Grid, it does highlight just how deeply he was effected by his exile. Even if this isn’t a sign of hope for the future, it’s a clear indicator that Drakkon is truly willing to work with the Rangers if it means he doesn’t end up here once again.
