Lord Drakkon Just SAVED Three Mighty Morphin Heroes

The Power Rangers’ greatest enemy, Lord Drakkon, just saved every single one of their lives in a classically brutal fashion.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Power Rangers #3 by Ryan Parrott, Francesco Mortarino, Raul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire, on sale now.

On Earth, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are reeling from one betrayal after another in the face of the most powerful form their most frequent enemies have ever taken on. It might sound like a lot, and it certainly is, but it’s still far better than the goings-on out in the cosmos. The Omega Rangers have had their ship commandeered by a race of intangible space vampires known as the Horrid. To make matters worse, it seems as though Drakkon has made the heel turn that all of them were expecting and joined forces with their tormentors. If there’s one thing Drakkon knows how to do, it’s manipulating people and the Omega Rangers are about to find out just how valuable that particular skill can be.

The Omega Rangers and Xi have finally regrouped after their individual encounters with the Horrid, though they can’t agree on what to do next. Zack goes so far as to suggest abandoning the ship and turning the Spectrum II into a bomb, which would at least prevent the Horrid from doing any further harm, even if it would leave them all stranded. Trini is unwilling to leave Drakkon behind, but Zack is convinced that he led them into the Horrid’s grasp on purpose. Xi interjects, reminding them that they don’t have time to fight amongst themselves with so much at stake and so little time, remarking that he may even have some inside information that could help them. They’re going to need to draw the Horrid out with something more tempting than themselves, something with a bit more power.

The Omegas make their way to the airlock and alert Xi once they’ve arrived. The three suit up, and when Xi opens the hatch, they all head out into the void finding far more of their assailants than there was the last time Trini took a spacewalk. While the Rangers punch and kick their way through the hoard, the Horrid King and Drakkon watch on from the bridge. The Horrid King remarks that the Rangers have fallen right into Drakkon’s trap, the former tyrant responding that there was never any hope of them coming back for him, so of course they would try and escape on their own.

Their conversation is cut short by the arrival of the Red Omegazord, called in by Jason once he was able to get to the far side of the battlefield. Drakkon tells the Horrid King that the Zord could be the Rangers’ way out, or worse, their way to destroy the Spectrum II in retaliation. Not willing to lose what he has so recently gained, the Horrid King sends every one of his demonic children to drain the Omegazord of its power before it can be put to good use against them. It’s more than enough to overpower the Zord, but it also leaves the Horrid King all alone with the least trustworthy person in the universe.

Xi and Yale rush into the bridge, drawing the Horrid King’s attention long enough for Drakkon to impale him through the back, killing him almost instantly. Just as the rest of the Horrid are breaking through the Red Omegazord’s shields, they all start shrieking in agony with the death of their progenitor. The Omega Rangers have no idea what is happening, and Xi is more than happy to inform them that he has been picking up Drakkon’s every last word the entire time, being fed intel in order to guide the battle along to where they needed it to end.

Drakkon may have saved their lives, but he still isn’t capable of being trusted, and so Trini returns him to his cell once the dust has settled. If it had been anyone else, maybe Drakkon’s actions would have a greater impact on his reputation. Unfortunately, he is exactly who he is, and his legacy is set in stone no matter how he may try to make up for it. Even if he isn’t on their side, the Omega Rangers can at least rest easy that Drakkon isn’t actively trying to get them all killed. Not yet, at least.
