A major DC hero was the first casualty of Alan Moore’s lost DC epic “Twilight” — with this mystery leading to the biggest plot twist in the story.
Alan Moore’s “Twilight of the Superheroes” was a proposed epic conclusion to the DC Universe in the vein of something like The Dark Knight Returns or his own “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?” would have put the heroes of the DC Universe into open war with each other in the 1980s.
Much like Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen, “Twilight” would’ve revolved around a murder mystery. And as seen in the just-published pitch in the just-released DC Through the 80s: The End of Eras, Vol. 1, one vital hero would’ve been at the center of a murder mystery that changed everything about this unseen world.
QUESTION’S INVESTIGATION
While the majority of “Twilight” would have focused on the various superhero-run Houses that control the ruins of the future DC world, a running subplot would have centered on some of the other lingering figures from the universe. While many former heroes have joined up with the Houses and gained a sense of notoriety and fame, others slowly die out in a small district within Sandy’s Place, which is described as the main barroom in the former hero slum. Run by Sandra Knight (the former Phantom Lady of the Freedom Fighters), many former heroes while away their final days at the bar.
A handful of heroes like Green Arrow and Black Canary still have a purpose in life, and those two run the local newspaper known as the Black Feathers. They’ve grown to become close friends with Vic Sage, the Question. Still working as something of a freelance investigator, Question explores mysteries across the area, more out of genuine curiosity and moral obligation than any chance of making money. One such case that intrigues him is the mystery of a short man who’s been killed. It seems that one night, the man had been spotted with a tall and mysterious dominatrix at a local bar. The pair went into an upstairs room together but never come out.
