“My guiding light on this is really two-fold: keep them villains and write these characters as independent of their counterparts on Earth-0,” writer Andy Schmidt said in an interview. “I’m not writing evil Batman, I’m writing Owlman. I’m not writing dark Wonder Woman, I’m writing Super Woman, and so on…” He also said that his take on the Syndicate will draw on their appearance in the first issue of Crisis on Infinite Earths and the JLA: Earth-2 graphic novel by Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly.

Spinning out of the events of Dark Nights: Death Metal, the Crime Syndicate miniseries will focus on the eponymous team and their iron rule of Earth-3. Schmidt will be joined by Kieran McKeown and Bryan Hitch, with Hitch illustrating the origin story of Ultraman.

Crime Syndicate #1 goes on sale on Mar. 2, 2021 from DC.
