As Juggernaut investigates the origins of a new supervillain, the antihero discovers he’s on a collision course with a classic Captain America foe.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Juggernaut #3, by Fabian Nicieza, Ron Garney, Matt Milla, & VC’s Joe Sabino, on sale now.
Over the years, Juggernaut has faced off against many formidable opponents, most often the X-Men and other characters associated with his half-brother, Charles Xavier. However, Cain Marko has battled many of the Marvel Universe’s supervillains as he has occasionally flirted with his own redemption, too.
And as Cain continues his latest attempt at a fresh start — complete with a new set armor and gainful employment with Damage Control — the Juggernaut discovers he is careening on a collision course with one of Captain America’s oldest foes: Doctor Arnim Zola. And as Cain prepares for an inevitable showdown, Marko learns that the mad scientist may have a supervillain army of his own up his robotic sleeves in Juggernaut #3.
Cain finds himself on the hot seat as he is sued for property and business damages caused by his fight against Spider-Man way back in 1982’s Amazing Spider-Man #229 by Roger Stern, John Romita, Jr. and Jim Mooney. The overdue legal proceedings are interrupted by the arrival of a new iteration of the supervillain Quicksand. Like the original incarnation of Quicksand, the villain takes on the form of a massive sandstorm that threatens to engulf the entire New York City block. With some quick thinking and the help of his new partner D-Cell, Juggernaut is able to defeat the latest version of Quicksand as the authorities arrive to take her into custody.
As Damage Control assesses the scene, a preliminary scan of the area reveals a suspicious radioactive isotope evidently giving the new Quicksand her powers. Further investigation on the rogue element links the isotope to the private firm Absolution Solutions, a company that deals heavily in for-profit prisons nationwide. Cain and his Damage Control co-workers discover the company is owned and run by Arnim Zola. The nefarious scientist has been conducting genetic experiments on the inmates of the prisons linked to Absolution Solutions to turn a new generation of supervillains into his personal army of super-powered foes.
