Injustice: Year Zero brings a long-teased idea about Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy’s relationship to fruition in the fan-favorite video game DC Universe.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Injustice: Year Zero #8, by Tom Taylor, Cain Tormey, Rain Beredo, and Wes Abbott, on sale now.
In the Injustice Universe, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have always watched each other’s backs in the face of adversity, whether it’s against Batman and the Justice League or the Joker. It’s followed the precedent of their relationship seen in comics like Gotham City Sirens and the Harley Quinn animated series, helping turn their bond from that of friendship to something much, much more.
And now, in Injustice: Year Zero #8, a long-teased part of this alternate reality DC Universe has finally been confirmed, as Harley and Ivy get married in Las Vegas.
In this prequel to the first Injustice video game, Harley leaves the mind-controlling Joker after he attacks her. Harley breaks Ivy out of Arkham Asylum and then heads to her sister’s home in Gotham, where Harley asks Ivy to look after her daughter, Lucy, when she inevitably goes back to the Joker. After an overwhelmed Ivy departs and warns the Joker to leave Harley alone, she shows up in a car to take her bestie somewhere to put her anxiety at ease.
They travel to Las Vegas where they discuss how bleak and inescapable the future looks. Harley admits she can’t evade the Joker, for whatever reason, and that she’s on a never-ending path of self-destruction. Meanwhile, Harley knows Ivy will continue to be an environmentally conscious villain, so it just doesn’t seem like they’ll ever get a happy ending together. That, however, changes when Harley returns from a chaotic night of gambling to meet Ivy dressed and proposing in their suite. An Elvis impersonator is there ready to officiate, and Harley’s family is present and accounted for too, setting the stage for the nuptials.
Harley and Ivy have a quick wedding that ends with them kissing passionately after exchanging vows, with confetti falling to celebrate their romance as little Lucy gleefully looks on. It’s a powerful moment that brings a long-teased vision to come to fruition,
The marriage of Harley and Ivy in the Injustice Universe was first teased in 2018’s Injustice 2 #70, by Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Juan Albarran, Rex Lokus and Wes Abbott. In that issue, we saw what seemed to be a picture from what appeared to be their Las Vegas wedding poster with Elvis, Harley and Ivy, with Ivy also admitting at Orca’s wedding that she was surprised marriage popped up in her life.
