In their fan-favorite Marvel Comics series, Bill and Ted’s excellent adventures and bogus journeys technically became made them superheroes.
While Bill S. Preston and Theodore Logan might be some of film’s most famous time-travelers icons thanks to Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Bill and Ted were officially Marvel superheroes in the early 90s. During the early 1990’s Marvel released a 12 issue series featuring the comedic pair.
During the fall of 1991, Marvel released Bill and Ted’s Excellent Comic Book, written and pencilled by Evan Dorkin. Though the comic was short-lived and ended after 13 issues (including an adaption of Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey.) Still, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Comic Book series won an Eisner Award, one of comics’ highest honors, and is still regarded as a cult-classic today. And in one of the most memorable stories from this series, Bill and Ted transformed into a pair of superheroes called the Super Stallyns.
While not technically canon in regards to the main plotline of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure or its sequels, the comic spin-offs that star Bill and Ted offer a medium for the duo to explore more wacky adventures.
In Bill and Ted’s Excellent Comic Book #10, “Don’t Believe Hype,” the two find themselves in a dimension resembling a comic book. This became a rather tongue-in-cheek look at the typical comic book portrayal. After attempting to perform a concert in Utter Boredom with their band, their time-traveling phone booth takes them to Hyperworld. Luckily for the pair, they are surrounded by superheroes, including some of their favorites. Unfortunately, they are also surrounded by supervillains.
Within moments they are confronted by a superhero pair, Mr. Metalliguts, and Der Cranium. The Wild Stallyns are mistaken as villains initially, though they must turn to superheroes in order to get back their stolen time-travel booth. The “normals”, or anyone who does not act as either a superhero or a supervillain, reluctantly don costumes and are given superpowers. After being given the ability to fly, the new and improved Super Stallyns fly off to take down Dr. Braino, the main villain responsible for their missing travel booth.
