DC’s ‘Original Batman’ Leads a New Super Team in 80-Page Generations: Shattered

DC’s upcoming Generations: Shattered one-shot will see the 1939 version of Batman lead a classic team of heroes on a mission to save the universe.

A giant-sized one-shot will kick off DC’s “Generations” event with the original version of Batman leading a team of classic heroes.

GamesRadar has the first look at Generations: Shattered #1, which will launch DC’s delayed event and see a slew of older takes on superheroes join forces to save the universe. The one-shot will span 80 pages and cost $9.99, finally beginning the storyline that DC intended to debut before COVID-19 halted production. The issue, which will see the 1939 iteration of the Dark Knight, arrives this January.

Along with the cover art, the synopsis for the issue teases what’s in store for readers when the unique tale is released:

A threat of cosmic proportions to DC’s newest (and oldest) universe compels one of the most unusual groups of heroes ever assembled to take on the most mysterious foe they have ever encountered. Join the original Batman, Kamandi, Starfire, Booster Gold, Dr. Light, Steel, and Sinestro in their quest to save the universe before time runs out!

Shattered is written by Dan Jurgens, Robert Venditti and Andy Schmidt with art by Ivan Reis, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, Aaron Lopresti, Fernando Pasarin, Paul Pelletier and more. And as the cover shows, the Batman in this book will have his more theatrical cowl and larger belt, which debuted in 1939’s Detective Comics #27. He’ll be joined by Green Lantern Sinestro, Starfire in her classic costume and more legacy heroes.

After being teased in Scott Snyder and Bryan Hitch’s short in Wonder Woman #750, “Generations” was meant to kick off in May of this year, before the pandemic threw a wrench into DC’s publishing schedule. Ahead of Shattered, September’s Detective Comics #1027 will feature “Generations: Fractured,” a short written by Jurgens with art by Jurgens and Nowlan. That tale will see Batman face off against Calendar Man before being thrown back to 1939

Generations: Shattered #1 arrives Jan. 5 from DC.
