Mario Has a Huge Week as the Fall TV Season Approaches


August has finally given way to September, and that means a bunch of new video games, TV shows, films and comics are on the horizon as families head back to school.

Here are all the biggest trailers, teasers and promos from the first week of September 2020.

The Amazing Spider-Man

One of the most definitive feuds in comic books is between Spider-Man and the original Green Goblin, Norman Osborn. With the longtime supervillain finally purged of the symbiote’s influence he suffered during the crossover event Absolute Carnage, the two lifelong foes are set for an epic rematch in this month’s anniversary issue of The Amazing Spider-Man. A motion comic trailer teasing their next showdown sees Norman targeted by the murderous Sin-Eater.

Written by Nick Spencer and illustrated by Ryan Ottley, The Amazing Spider-Man #850 goes on sale Sept. 30 from Marvel Comics.

The Boys

Amazon has released two promos coinciding with the release of The Boys Season 2. A faux propaganda ad teases the fall of civilizations, with Homelander promising to stand as the last line of defense to keep the United States safe from enemies foreign and domestic. A second promo is for the new mobile AR game Baby Laser Tag, recreating a memorable moment from the first season by allowing players to control a laser-eyed baby to defend against attacks from Vought International and the Seven.

The Boys stars Karl Urban as Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid as Hughie, Laz Alonso as Mother’s Milk, Tomer Kapon as Frenchie, Karen Fukuhara as the Female, Erin Moriarty as Annie January, Chace Crawford as the Deep, Antony Starr as Homelander, Aya Cash as Stormfront and Simon Pegg as Hughie’s dad. The Boys has been renewed for Season 3, with Season 2 available now on Amazon Prime Instant Video.

The CW

While principal photography has just begun on The CW’s DCTV programming, the network has released a sizzle reel for all of its upcoming superhero series including the premiere of Superman & Lois. With Arrow no longer on the air, the shared television universe has been rebranded as the CWverse while taking the time to the DC adaptation that started it all in 2012 before providing a recap of its subsequent growth.

The CWverse returns with new episodes for its various DCTV series January 2021 on The CW.

DC FanDome

The first half of DC Entertainment’s virtual event DC FanDome was a runaway success, with 22 million viewers from across 220 different countries logging on to watch DC’s biggest news in movies, television and video games. The second half of the event is poised to launch Sept. 12. Fans will create their own schedules for the online expo, selecting from over 100 hours of pre-recorded panels and presentations. The second half of the event places a greater emphasis on fan participation, with art and cosplay shown, while DC Publisher Jim Lee teased panels involving reveals from the company’s forays into television for fans.

DC FanDome: Explore the Multiverse takes place Saturday, Sept. 12.

Freeform

While Halloween is still well over a month away, Freeform is already preparing for its annual marathon of family-friendly movies ripe for the October country in the cable network’s 31 Days of Halloween programming run. With everything from fan-favorite flicks like Hocus Pocus and The Addams Family as part of the movie marathon, Freeform is poised to ring in Halloween in style.

Freeform’s 31 Days of Halloween kicks off on Oct. 1 at 12:30pm ET/PT with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

The Haunting of Bly Manor

Netflix’s acclaimed anthology horror series helmed by fan-favorite filmmaker Mike Flanagan returns next month with The Haunting of Bly Manor. The follow-up to 2018’s The Haunting of Hill House, the upcoming season features an all-new story, with the returning cast portraying completely different characters in an adaptation of Henry James’ 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw. A teaser trailer for the season hints at a much more Gothically tinged ghost story in which a young governess finds herself working at a haunted mansion where the children she is tasked to care for are aware of the malevolent spirits in the house.

Directed by Mike Flanagan, The Haunting of Bly Manor stars Victoria Pedretti, Rahul Kohli, Catherine Parker, T’Nia Miller, Amelia Eve, Amelie Smith and Benjamin Ainsworth. The series arrives of Netflix Oct. 9.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous

While Jurassic World: Dominion may still be a year away, the popular dino franchise comes to television this month with the CG animated series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. Taking place at the same time as 2015’s Jurassic World, the Netflix original series as a group of young campers’ vacation go disastrously wrong when the genetically engineered Indominus Rex breaks out of captivity, causing the entire resort to plunge into dino-fueled chaos.

Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, Colin Trevorrow, Scott Kreamer and Lane Lueras, with Zack Stentz serving as a consulting producer. The series will premiere on Netflix Sept. 18.

The Last Exorcist

Just in time for Halloween, the indie horror movie The Last Exorcist is coming to home video next month. Starring fan-favorite actor Danny Trejo, the film has a young woman set out to rescue her sister and she has been possessed by an insidious demon. The debut trailer for the film is steeped in sex and violence as Trejo’s character confronts his faith while facing bloody, supernatural threats consuming a new generation.

Written and directed by Robin Bain, The Last Exorcist stars Terri Ivens, Danny Trejo, Rachele Brooke Smith and Cate Jones. The film will be released on digital HD and DVD on Oct. 13.

Magic: The Gathering

A expansion is coming to the popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering, with the new card set “Zendikar Rising” releasing later this month for the mobile game MTG: Arena a week ahead of its tabletop launch. The 20 new cards kick off a bold new future for the iconic game, as publisher Wizards of the Coast has announced its plans for 2021, including surprise cross-promotions with The Walking Dead and Dungeons & Dragons throughout next year.

The “Zendikar Rising” expansion set will be released on MTG: Arena on Sept. 17 and for tabletop on Sept. 25 by Wizards of the Coast.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit

The next Mario Kart game goes in a radically different direction, mixing the usual fast-paced gameplay with real-world environments in Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit for the Nintendo Switch. The upcoming title has players set up physical gates and remote control karts around their home to map out racetracks that blends the classic racing cast and items with a mixed-reality setting, providing a truly immersive gameplay experience.

Published by Nintendo, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit will be released Oct. 16 for the Nintendo Switch.

Marvel Contest of Champions

The popular mobile game Marvel Contest of Champions has launched a new update, incorporating characters from Marvel’s widely acclaimed Dawn of X relaunch for its X-Men line of comic books. The story’s redesigned incarnations of Professor X and Apocalypse are now joining the fight. A trailer shows Apocalypse reflecting on the follies and failures and humanity before he is approached by Charles Xavier to join the mutant nation-state of Krakoa.

Developed by Kabam, Marvel Contest of Champions is available on the App Store and Google Play for iOS and Android devices.

Marvel’s Avengers

With Marvel’s Avengers now available one most major consoles, letting players save the day as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, a new character was been confirmed for the DLC roster. Kate Bishop, the Young Avenger and teenage Hawkeye, officially joins the fight. The reveal trailer introduces the character working alongside her mentor Clint Barton to battle A.I.M. robots and locate a missing Nick Fury.

Developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix, Marvel’s Avengers is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC.

No Time to Die

As movie theaters reopen around the world, Daniel Craig’s final outing as James Bond in No Time to Die remains on track for a November release. After unveiling a new poster, EON Productions shared a second theatrical trailer for the upcoming film, with Bond confronting secrets kept by his lover Madeline Swan as a new, masked villain named Safin begins a plot that could completely upend modern civilization.

Directed and co-written by Cary Fukunaga, No Time to Die stars Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Rory Kinnear, Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Jeffrey Wright, Ana de Armas, Dali Benssalah, David Dencik, Lashana Lynch, Billy Magnussen and Rami Malek. The film arrives in theaters Nov. 20.

PlayStation 5

The next-generation of home console gaming officially kicks off this holiday season with the launch of the PlayStation 5. Sony has unveiled a new trailer highlighting the upcoming console’s hardware. With everything from immersive, 3D sound to haptic controllers and adaptive trigger buttons, the PS5 is slated to bring a more intuitive gameplay experience to fans while its launch titles are shaping up to be breathtaking presentations of what the console is capable of. The trailer does not list a retail price or specific launch date.

PlayStation 5 goes on sale this holiday season.

The Stand

CBS All Access’ ambitious miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s apocalyptic 1978 novel The Stand is coming this December. Helmed by The New Mutants filmmaker Josh Boone and featuring an all-star cast, the show is slated to run for ten episodes. The first teaser trailer opens with Whoopi Goldberg’s Mother Abigail introducing herself before the extensive cast is shown in a vision of the United States ravaged by a plague as the backdrop for an epic battle between good and evil.

The Stand stars Alexander Skarsgård, Whoopi Goldberg, James Marsden, Odessa Young, Jovan Adepo, Amber Heard, Owen Teague, Henry Zaga, Brad William Henke, Irene Bedard, Nat Wolff, Eion Bailey, Heather Graham, Katherine McNamara, Fiona Dourif, Natalie Martinez, Hamish Linklater, Daniel Sunjata and Greg Kinnear. The series premieres Dec. 17 on CBS All Access.

Supernatural

Originally slated to end this past May, Supernatural returns for its final stretch of seven episodes next month, bringing about the Winchester Brothers epic showdown against God. An extended trailer had Sam and Dean reflect on all the familiar faces that helped reach the upcoming confrontation while Jack struggled with his chosen role as the one to kill the Most High,

Starring Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, and Alexander Calvert, the final seven episodes of Supernatural begin airing on Oct. 8 on The CW. The first fourteen seasons of Supernatural are now available on Netflix.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars

With Nintendo’s flagship Super Mario franchise celebrating its 35th anniversary this month, the company is pulling out all the stops to commemorate the occasion. The biggest announcement was Super Mario 3D All-Stars, compiling 1996’s Super Mario 64, 2002’s Super Mario Sunshine and 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy together for the Nintendo Switch, marking the first time Sunshine has been available since its debut on the GameCube. The anniversary collection is only available through the end of March 2021.

Published by Nintendo, Super Mario 3D All-Stars will be available on Nintendo Switch from Sept. 18 through March 31, 2021.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

One of the most acclaimed titles on the Wii U was 2013’s Super Mario 3D World and an enhanced remake of the game is coming to the Nintendo Switch this February. As part of the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, the video game publisher announced that the new version would arrive on the Switch alongside a new expansion titled Bowser’s Fury. While details about the new version of the game are still under wraps, a sneak peek at the new content teased a dark, ominous confrontation against King Koopa in addition to the classic 2013 title.

Developed and published by Nintendo, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury arrives on Nintendo Switch Feb. 12, 2021.

Teen Titans: Beast Boy

Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo’s follow-up to their bestselling original graphic novel Teen Titans: Raven has gone on sale, focusing a very different member of the Teen Titans. Reimagining Gar Logan for the YA audience, the new graphic novel Teen Titans: Beast Boy has the young superhero prepare to graduate from high school while still struggling to fit in and embrace his shape-shifting powers. DC has since confirmed that the graphic novel will receive a sequel from Garcia and Picolo next year in Teen Titans: Beast Boy Loves Raven.

The Walking Dead

Originally slated to air this past April before facing a six-month delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the long-awaited Season 10 finale of The Walking Dead is coming next month. Finally resolving the longstanding “Whisperer War” storyline, a trailer for the upcoming episode has the communities of Alexandria and Hilltop take on the Whisperers, led by the brutal Beta. While Season 11 has since been delayed due to the global health crisis, Season 10 will receive six bonus episodes following the season finale, which is slated to air in 2021.

Airing Sunday, Oct. 4 on AMC, The Walking Dead Season 10 finale stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton, and Cooper Andrews.

Welcome to the Blumhouse

Amazon and acclaimed film and television studio Blumhouse Productions has entered a partnership to produce eight all-new horror films, helmed by diverse and emerging filmmakers, with the movies connected thematically by twisted side of the dark side of romantic and familial love. Released under the banner Welcome to the Blumhouse, the first four movies of the film series will debut on Amazon Prime Video this October, just in time for Halloween.

The first two films for Welcome to the Blumhouse, The Lie and Black Box, premiere Oct. 6 on Amazon. The second two films, Evil Eye and Nocturne, premiere Oct. 13.
