Venom’s Official Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed

While the film doesn’t begin its rollout in theaters until Thursday night, most reviews from advance screenings haven’t been too kind to Sony’s Venom. Those negative sentiments have added up, resulting in director Ruben Fleischer’s film arriving with a “Rotten” rating.

Based on a number of 49 reviews, only 16 of which are “Fresh,” Venom debuted on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes with a 25 percent rating, but has since inched up to 33 percent. Still, that places Venom ahead of the likes of Green Lantern, Ghost Rider and Suicide Squad.

CBR’s Meg Downey characterized Venom as a relic from an era before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, akin to Ang Lee’s Hulk or the Ben Affleck Daredevil, with early-2000s humor to match.

It’s a little too early to know whether the negative reactions will affect Venom‘s opening weekend box office. As of today, the film is on track to earn somewhere between $60 million and $65 million, more than enough to break the domestic record for an October release, currently held by 2013’s Gravity, with $55.7 million.

Swinging into theaters Friday nationwide, director Ruben Fleischer’s Venom stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying and Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake/Riot.
