Child’s Play Co-Creator Voices Criticism Over Reboot First Look Photo

Following a first look of the updated killer doll Chucky for the Child’s Play reboot, co-creator Don Mancini has thrown shade at the project as he plans to continue the original series.

After Orion Picture’s Twitter account posted a friendier looking version of Chucky… well, half of his face, at least, Mancini made it clear he wanted nothing to do with the project.

Mancini has written all seven installments in the franchise and directed the last three movies, but he has distanced himself from the upcoming remake. Mancini has instead opted to develop sequels to the franchise, set up thanks to last year’s Cult of Chucky, with a television series rumored to be in the works.

The franchise from the ’80s focuses on the spirit of Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) possessing a Good Guy doll and going on murderous rampages. Rumors have suggested this reboot will stray far from Mancini’s initial storyline, focusing on the doll being a technological anomaly that’s programmed for violence.

Mancini has never shied away from how little he wants to do with the reboot, instead vowing to make sure his initial vision is seen through fully. “It [Cult of Chucky] points in a specific direction for some of these characters, and where they end up,” Mancini said. “That is not something I would flee from. I do have ideas of where the next step for these characters will go. I have all kinds of different ideas. This is an ongoing franchise that we want to oversee as we go into the future.”
