Anna Paquin reveals that although she’s open to reprising her role in the X-Men film series, she doesn’t think she’ll have the opportunity to do so.
Although she won an Academy Award at age 11 for her performance in The Piano, Paquin is perhaps best known by a generation of fans for her role in Fox’s blockbuster franchise, beginning in 2000 with Bryan Singer’s X-Men. She returned as Rogue in X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand, and, in 2014, X-Men: Days of Future Past, but most of her scenes were cut from the theatrical release.

Asked by Variety whether she might make another X-Men movie, Paquin replied, “If there was a way that it made sense for my character to be in the world, of course. I feel like that’s my film family, because I’ve been making those movies since I was 16.”
However, Paquin admitted the rebooted timeline franchise might make her return a little complicated. “There’s been so many spinoffs and reboots and TV shows,” she said, “so I’m not sure where Rogue or the other original characters fit into the current plotlines.” She finally concluded, “It’s probably not going to happen.”
Sadly, Paquin’s final performance as Rogue is criticized as one of the biggest X-Men movie missteps. After a major role in the first three movies, Rogue’s character arc was massively reduced in Days of Future Past. Originally supposed to take on much of the part that was given to Ellen Page’s Kitty Pryde, the convoluted storytelling led to the eventual release of the “Rogue Cut.”
Although Rogue is currently missing from the rebooted roster of X-Men heroes, there is every chance she could appear in Simon Kinberg’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix. With X-Men: Apocalypse recasting fan-favorite heroes like Cyclops and Jean Grey, it’s only a matter of time before someone else gets to play Rogue.

Previously, True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer suggested Paquin’s version of Rogue could join Fox’s The Gifted. Either way, if Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige or anyone else plans on a nostalgic X-Men movie to continue the timeline glimpsed at the end of Days of Future Past, at least they know Paquin would be on board for a Rogue reprieve.
The next installment of the series, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, arrives in theaters Feb. 14, 2019.
